Monitor Help - Long time Project getting to completion

Ok so I know there are 3 choices of monitors.  I wanted to go with the easiest solution and also need a fairly cheap solution (TV / Monitor)

PC - Mamewah (old version). 
486 machine with an old video card (the video card has a VGA / DVI / Svideo outputs). 
My cabinet is 25 3/4 wide.... so I am pretty sure a 27inch monitor fits perfect. 
Here is what I have done so far.

1)  Plug pc into computer monitor works fine.  Computer monitor is widescreen.
2)  Plug pc into an LCD and CRT and did not work.  Everything was moving really fast on the tv... both new LCD and an old CRT.  Is this a scanline issue?
3)  Went to local stores aka best buy to purchase a 27inch computer monitor.... they dont have anything but widescreen (TV and monitors).

So, here are my questions.  Where can I get a monitor that is 27inch 4:3 standard display that I know will work with the old pc?  Why did the pc not work when plugged into the CRT and LCD?

Ok so I have been searching for over 3 hours.  I need a 27inch 4:3 or close display.  My opening has 25 3/4 by about 26 inches tall.  I would like to fill as much space as possible without spending $550 on the Wells Gardner model.

So, I guess since there is no way to get an LCD... i need to go to the old televisions.   With that said, any ideas why the pc would not work when I plugged it in via Svideo.  I could see something on the screen but it was going crazy...

You are really used a 486 PC?

 As in a PC from 1992?

You can get 4:3 out of a widescreen display by putting smoked glass over it, setting mame to use a widescreen resolution AND setting it to enforce the original aspect ratio. It works perfectly. Some monitors will also let you do something like that in their menu.

The smoked glass is the key though, hides the fact you aren't using the whole monitor.

lol ya it was really a 486.  I just dumped in a core 2 duo 3.0 with an 8800GTX since some games wouldnt run on the 486.  Now on to the next problem lol.
