Author Topic: 8liners chassis+arcade vga= 2 pics help! (Read 3541 times)

I'm trying to set up a vertical cab. I'm using an 8 liners chassis on an arcade monitor. When I boot up the computer, it comes on the screen split in half with 2 pictures. The pictures are fine but hard to play pacman with it split in the middle of the screen When I try to load the arcacde vga drivers from cd, I get an error message saying drivers are not compatable with device being installed. I can hook up a computer monitor on the same video output and the picture is fine (from what I understand this shouldnt happen w/arcade vga. The computer monitor wont take a 15hz signal) I've used the tools to rotate the screen vertically and still the same thing. I've used the screen size setting and worked the ajustments on the chassis and still no results. I really think the drivers arent properly installed .Is there anything else I need to try??
Sorry so long and winded. I am currently on the road right now and may be a couple of days before I can check my post again. TIA for any help

Did you plug the VGA cable into the correct VGA header on the back of the ARcadeVGA card?

There's two headers and one of them outputs 15khz only the other 30khz... sounds like to me you are plugging your's into the wrong one.... (you wouldn't havppen to also be using a JPAC too, would you?)

EDIT -> also is it that your vhold is just off a little bit perhaps? or is it literally 2 versions of the screen on the arc mon?

hm...
Are you using a JPAC??? That screen splitting is a feature built into the JPAC to split the resolution... If it receives a freequency that is more than 15Khz, then it does exactly what you are saying... You may want to try & plugging the monitor cable into the other port on the AVGA.

Yes it is plugged into the right header on the arcade vga. It wouldnt work on the other output. No, I'm not using the jpac.....yet. I wanted to get the screen up and running first before hooking up controls. Also Rampy I did mess with the vhold and it didnt help. The black bar that seperates the 2 screens is twice as big as a normal black bar which baffles me. Its like its putting 2 different screens up at once. 1 image is 3/4 of the top, the next is 3/4 of the bottom. Its not half & half. I will try the other header just to make sure I didnt overlook something

You do know when putting a new chasis on a arcade monitor there's probably some settings that you'll need to futz with to get it aligned right.

I'm gonna guess the AVGA is putting out the correct stuff if you've got it on the right header. Don't suppose you have a working pcb to plug into the monitor to "prove" that it isn't just the AVGA acting up.

I couldn't tell you off hand what it means but there's gotta be some monitor adjustment that needs to be made...

hmph... aalthough I dont' know enough to point you in the right direction. Are the vposition knobs/adjustments?

This probably is a contributing factor, if not the problem. Put your old card back in (I'm guessing it was a Radeon). Uninstall it's utilities and drivers. Remove it, put the ArcadeVGA back in, and hit F8 before Windows loads and choose 'Safe Mode'. Now run the installation utility from the CD.

tom61, yes I had a ati card in there originaly. I did all of that and still got error even in safe mode. Went as far as deleting windows xp and reinstalling fresh with no video drivers and still wont install.

Rampy, Thanks for pointing out the RGVAC link. This *must* be the problem. Will check it out when I get a chance. I do have the pcb as a another option to check. Thanks again

Good point. Some of the older monitors do require you to send a composite sync to both the neg h- & v-sync pins on the chassis. Below is a pic of my GO7 chassis with the neg sync's jumpered together (white wire) so it will work with jamma games.

My 8-liners chassis only accepts a single jamma-standard composite sync, so you may need to have both the neg syncs twisted together from the ArcadeVGA to the monitor chassis. That's the white wire here:

After getting it checked out, the AVGA cards V- and H- are both hooked up to the white wire on the 8liners. I'm wondering now if ( I still suspect the correct video drivers arent insalled) this monitor has a V+ & H+ sync. Its not a WG or Electrohome. It came out of a Boomr Rangr With a chassis and monitor I believe is original. I havent been able to identify on Bob Roberts page.

regarding the drivers. Even at boot up it shoudl be at 15khz man. I've used the AVGA in a dos environment and the bootup bios screens, the dos prompt, etc... are all 15hz swimmingly without drivers.

that's not to say if the you load windows and the windows drivers are borked you wouldn't have this problem.. but I'd think to eliminate one point of failure try using a dos boot disk =P start simple.

Rampy, it is an 8liners chassis. After looking at my post again I see the confusion. I wasnt thinking when I was talking about + or - sync. For some reason I was thinking the sync came from the monitor and not the chassis. My fault. But if the card is putting out a 15khz signal, wouldnt the signal be jumbled up if I hooked up a computer monitor?? I shouldnt be getting clean video on both a computer monitor and an arcade monitor (except for the split on the arcade monitor) from the same output on the AVGA should I?

Also, the bootup screen works fine but is split in 2 also

I just had a brain fart.... are you trying to display concurrently onh your arcade monitor AND your PC monitor?

if so... I would suggest that you DONT ... at lesat initially. You have to do some fancier config to get that working correctly. I'd try to get just the arcade monitor going and not have the PC monitor connect to the AVGA at all...

PS i have no other ideas man, btw... how about some pics btw...might help somone more knowlegeable troubleshoot (a shot of the screen, a shot of the connections to the monitor)

Are you trying to connect the arcade monitor to the top port? That's the problem then, the top VGA port outputs 31kHz, giving you the split screen. Plug it into the bottom VGA port (the one with no ribbon cable).

Rampy's right, don't run the ArcadeVGA with a PC monitor unless you have the arcade monitor working well. Once that's done, you need to play with the TV-out settings (the top VGA port and TV-out are linked)

No, I can run either video on the inside port (the one with no ribbon cable). Maybe thats the problem? I set the video card up using a computer monitor then plugged the arcade monitor....got split screen, went back to CM,to try and fix. Then back again to AM. I'm not running both at the same time. As for the pics, I wont be home for 2 more weeks (jobs suck!). I will get some up then if I still dont have any success.
Also when I did the original setup, I had a Radeon card in there before. Is there a chance the AVGA uses the same video drivers? I deleted, then reinstalled windows and still didnt fix problem.....oh well, in 2 weeks I can give more info

Something strange is happening here because the ArcadeVGA card is not capable of outputting 31Khz at all, from either port, unless in Windows and the drivers are loaded (in which case it can output 31Khz on the top port).

Ok, now that I can post pics, here they are. I tried another chassis I got from 8liners on a orion tv tube...still same problem. These are the pics of the tv and computer monitor. I left the error message I keep getting when I try to install the drivers. Its hard to read but says, This Display driver is not compatible with the display adapter(s) installed on your system. I believe the correct adapter (ATI Radeon VE DDR) is installed. Everything is hooked up correctly as far as I can tell.....any more suggestions?

It sounds like Windows is trying to use a default ATI Driver. You should use the driver disk that came with the ArcadeVGA.

You may want to try setting to 640x288 when you finish installing the driver.

I second what Stephen said... might need to do it in safe mode if XP is giving you fits and won't let you pick the "correct" driver.

I think we've found the problem here. Andy had me send the card back and he found it faulty. Hopefully a new card will fix all this! Thanks to all for all the suggestions

Now I need some asprin from this headache from wracking my brain!!
