How to get good at fighters?
« on: January 16, 2012, 11:40:15 pm »
This is really pretty embarrassing... I love playing Street Fighter games, but I am horrible at them. I didn't really grow up playing many arcade games and I don't know any moves to fighter games. I can usually defeat the first computer opponent and that is about it. Have any of you been in similar situations? I want to get good at a few fighting games (Street Fighter II, MK2, Marvel vs. Street Fighter, are my 3 favorites) but when you don't know any combos or strategies, it is hard to get good.

I agree with donk about looking up moves/ specials things like that to get good. once you read the moves then play the game and get your ass kicked repeatedly. Soon you'll start picking up on what moves can counter what, distances, when to do specials etc.

One thing that i found helped me a lot in learning street fighter is only using one button per game (to practice). you really begin to understand when to best use that button and the moves associated with it. Then once you've mastered that one button move on to another. then use all 3 punch buttons, then all three kicks and eventually all buttons with your full arsenal of mastered moves.

play a 2 player game (with infinite time if available)

you can practice doing hard/special moves without having a moving target or retaliation to worry about. you can try 200 times to do the spinning pile driver if you need to.

being able to do character special moves quickly and effectively is almost as important as remembering to block.

Depending on what game you are playing (marvel vs games) chaining supers is also a big deal, and aerial combos. I have a friend that rapes my face off at MvC2 and Im trying to get better by watching videos and doing what lilshawn said. Its tough, but you can do it.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

If you just want to play them better, you can look up the faqs - but if you want to get GOOD at them
find a bunch of hardcore players, and sit with them, taking copious notes.

practice. watch you tube vids. practicing is the most important (as long as you know the moves)
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Learn your normals, ie what punchs or kicks make good pokes, antiairs, which moves cross up ... Also make sure you can do all your special moves without thinking about it . Also learn to make sure you are finishing your combos. Don't have to be too fancy just try to make Sure you finish with a special that causes knock down. Spacing/zoning is also important, a lot of fighting game strategy is positioning with moves to get your opponent to a place where you can hit that damaging combo. Get them in the corner if you can. Apart from that i'd say download ggpo and play against the good guys
