Sony PVM-2530 VGA to CMPTR video issues. Please help.
« on: January 15, 2012, 06:13:16 am »
I have been using this monitor forever on my mame cabinet using s-video.  I recently enlisted the help of a friend to make a VGA to DB25 CMPTR cable so I can see what all the fuss was about.  I do get video but the problem I'm having is the screen will not stop scrolling no matter what I do to the vertical hold knob.  Also the image looks like crud.  I can't seem to find the optimal resolution to run in.

I'm using Windows XP on a computer that has integrated Nvidia 6xxx graphics.  I ran Soft15Khz and hit install.  I set my resolution to 640x480 before rebooting and the old CRT monitor I was using said sync out of range 15Khz.  So I hooked up my Sony PVM-2530 and I got an image but it looked horrible and would not stop scrolling.  I am not getting the split screen issue as mentioned before when not using interlacing.  I also do not have any options on either display settings in XP or using quickres to change to a resolution lower than 640x480.  I can make the screen stop scrolling if I open ANY window and MAXIMIZE it.  But when I do that all the text is jittery and you cannot read anything.  If I set the resolution to 640x200, 640x240 or 640x280 as I've seen people suggest then the screen starts flipping out literally.  It scrolls and scrolls and scrolls.  If I mess with the vertical hold knob I can make it slow down but never stop.

I have used 2 different computers to test this with and I get the same results.  Somewhat the same effects as what's mentioned in the following forum post:  http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34635

I played with multiple settings in powerstrip and I noticed if I changed the refresh rate it will either straighten up a bit or jump around like mad.

I promise I have searched high and low on google and these forums to find the "optimal" settings for this monitor in powerstrip but I can't seem to find anything that would help me.  This is my last ditch effort.  Does anyone use a similar config mind telling me what I should put for the resolution and any other misc settings within powerstip?  I really want to get this working again without s-video so my kids will leave me alone about when the arcade will be working again.   :badmood:

If you need anymore info or anything at all please let me know and I greatly appreciate any support anyone can provide.

Oh yeah, I used the following forum post as a point of reference for creating the cable.  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=105067.0

Just a quick update.  I managed to get a nice picture finally but the screen will not stop scrolling.  Based on what I've read it appears to be a sync issue.  Could anyone with more monitor knowledge than I verify that this schematic is correct?  I guess I'm just going to build another cable.

I would try tying the v-sync and h-sync wires together.

Awesome.  I will give that a shot.  But when you say tie them together do you mean both sync wires from the VGA side to a certain pin on the DB25 side?  If so, which pin on the DB25 do I tie them to?  Thanks so much for the help yall.

Oh yeah.  And searching the forums for your keywords resulted in this.

Guess I was too drunk to use the search engine correctly last night.  Found the post you mentioned and I'll give it a shot later on.  Thanks again!
