Having problems creating lists for older version of mame...
« on: January 09, 2012, 11:12:57 pm »
Wow.. I have been out of the scene for a while.. Would love some guidance please.

I would like to create a game list for an older version of mame (version 37 or so). To be used with my iCade and iMame.

I have tried a bunch of utilities (ie, rom lister, various batch files, etc) but have been unsuccessful.  I am running into problems since I am running Windows 7 64-bit (I do not have any older XP machines lying around) or MAC OSX.

I thought I would grab the old mame version 37 and use -listxml as a start.  Then feed that to rom lister to grab the vertical games I wanted.  No go.

Any ideas?  Should I dig up an older machine?

Thanks for your help.

can you provide a few more details than "no go"?
That doesn't give me much to go off of to help fix the problem.  I'm the romlister author.

Are you having problems actually running romlister on a 64bit machine, or is the problem that romlister doesn't like your xml file?

Hey NOP.  Thank you for your response.. and thank you for creating RomLister!

I have the latest mame64 downloaded and installed at f:/mame.
I have my roms installed under f:/mame/roms.
I have the latest RomLister.

I loaded RL and on the initial settings screen, I browsed to where mame64.exe is located.  A dos screen popped up quickly (no text) and it created the listxml file.  I did not select/install any of the other files (control.ini, etc).

I then went to the main RL screen and selected VERTICAL, but only about 10 roms were listed.

Am I on the right path?  Is it ok that I am mixing mame64 (latest build) with roms from mame v37?  I will try to add some of those other helper apps/data files (like controls.ini) to see if that helps with the rom categories.

I have been out of the scene for a while.. so I apologize for any noob questions.
Thanks for your help.

ah, I think the issue may be that you're using a very, very new version of mame.  Apparently the devs have changed the xml formatting slightly and now my code is looking for the wrong stuff.  I have not investigated what has changed.  Not sure when I will have the free time to do it either.  I just found out about this a week or so ago.

But I'm confused by your setup.  You want to run old roms from 037, but on the latest version of mame64?  I don't think you'll have a lot of luck with that combination due to the number of roms that have changed over that time gap.

So you could try pointing romlister to your v37 version of mame.exe and see if you can build a list with it- I can't guarantee something that old will work.
Or download a slightly older version of mame64 before they changed xml formatting to build a list off of.

Sorry this is a hassle.  It's kind of funny that you're stuck at both end cases of romlister's ability at the same time.  You're either too old or too new!

Hahaha.. Stuck in the middle...

My PC environment has evolved over the years to Quad core Windows 7 machines and iMacs.... while my love for retro games has stayed constant.

I will create a Windows XP machine and run mame v37, mame roms for v37 and rom lister.  I think that would do the trick!  I will create the XP session in Vmware.

I'll let you know how it goes.

The ultimate goal is to have all my v37 vertical roms installed on my iPad for use in iMame on my iCade.  Enough "i"'s for ya? :-)

Thanks again.

I wanted to close out this thread...

I created a Windows XP virtual session.
Installed mame v99, romlister, catver v99 and controls v98.2.
Pointed to my roms for mamev37.

RomLister worked like a charm. I was able to create a list of roms suitable for my iCade.

Thank you!
