Playing vertical games on Wells Gardner 25k7191
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:25:01 pm »
Ok, I'm trying to figure out a way to play vertical games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong on my WG25K7191 without having the edges of the top and bottom cut off. I've tried figuring out a way to use a custom resolution on MAME but have been unable to so far. I'm using an ArcadeVGA card right now. I'm assuming the 288 vertical lines is too much for my monitor to display, so can I customize the resolution through MAME? Any info would be great.

nah you can do it arcade vga has a resolution program for windows that you can create custom modes if i recall. if it dosent have it i may be thinking of this program
http://mamewah.mameworld.info/downloads.htm and goto mame resolution tool. but i think there is a prog like avgares.exe that runs in the background...i dont have a mame machine that is running windows right now or i would check for ya.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded Avgres and it works but I'm having trouble finding the right resolution to keep games like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man looking good. If Donkey Kong uses 224x256 vertical resolution, shouldn't something like 224x240-250 shrink the height to where it works on a horizontal monitor? I tried this and although it no longer cuts off at the top, the image has been widened to where it almost looks fullscreen even though I didn't mess with the horizontal resolution. Any ideas?

try the mame res tool. If i recall i had to use both of them. This is where i which advance Mame would have been updated to work in windows cause that is probably the best for custom resolutions as i currently have that in a dos cab for my vertical games in a galaxian cab and i love that.. with that program i didnt even need a avga card as there is also a arcmon.sys file you can download and load into your config.sys to make it work with arcade monitors..but i digress i believe you should try mame res tool.

What about GroovyMAME and the CRT_Emudriver? Surely that combination picks up where Advance MAME left off...

If you want 1-1 pixel display for vertical games on that horizontally mounted monitor, you are stuck with cutting off a few lines.

ArcadeVGARes will generate ini files for all of your games.  Works great.  Had no issues with Pac-Man, etc.

There is one solution for displaying vertical games, horizontally on a standard res monitor. Set the geometry for the largest vertical game. All other games, including horizontal ones will not fill the picture, but none will be larger than it.

What I did was use the avgres tool to create ini files for all my games and then delete them all except the ones for the vertical games, which I then edited to make them fit the monitor. For some odd reason the inis for all the other games, the horizontal games, changed the way they displayed to where they didn't fill the screen properly. So, I got it to work but had to rig it. Thanks for the info.
