Moving a cabinet?
« on: December 22, 2011, 05:11:25 pm »
Hey everyone.....I know this doesn't have too much to do with wooodworking but thought it may be the best place.  Next week I am going to go pick up my huge (39" monitor) showcase cabinet from a arcade 5 hours away.  I've gone over every scenario to try and figure out how to get it back home here and the cheapest would be for me to take my truck up and bring it back that way.  I've thought about renting a uhaul one way but that isn't very cost effective.

My question is, when loading it into the truck, would keeping it straight up be the best way to travel over the highway with it?  The only problem is the top of it would be sticking way up past my roof of the truck.  I don't think I want to lay it down as that may make the monitor bounce up and down more than it should and also may put stress on the pedestal part of the showcase cab.

So would the best way be right side up with moving blankets/tarp and straps to hold it in place?  If I strap it down enough I don't think highway wind should hurt it too much.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.....thanks everyone!!  Happy Holidays!

A showcase cab usually comes apart into 2 parts, the pedestal and the main unit.   I would transport the main unit on its back and the pedestal sitting upright.   Lots of moving blankets and straps are essential.

Yeah, don't let it fall off your truck on the highway like Malenko did with PP cab...

Well I ended up pulling a trailer behind my vehicle to go pick it up.  I am glad I didn't put it in the back of the truck bed because I did not want to lay it down and those things are really really tall.  I guess I didn't realize how tall they were.  Anyways, I used lots of moving blankets, straps, movers plastic wrap (probably the best purchase I could have made) and a huge tarp.  Luckily I used the tarp and wrap because it rained the whole way home and my trailer wasn't enclosed.

The cabinet is in very good condition except for the monitor I need to somehow fix......if you are feeling extra helpful, visit my thread in the Monitor/Video section because everything lilshawn and grantspain have suggested is not working....but I will keep trying.

Thanks for the ideas everyone and sorry to hear about Malenko's experience.....ouch.
