Really Simple Syndication
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Plug an RSS link into an RSS program, and you get newsfeed updates from that program.

The real answer.... a waste of time.  Well maybe that's a bit harsh, but for the end user they don't make any sense.

RSS feeds are supposed to be a way to get real-time updates, like a news ticker and they do that BUT if you want to view anything more complex then a couple of sentences you have to read the link to the article anyway which means you might as well just check the news site when you are ready to read the news of the day.  Also many of your free rss feed readers (like the one you probably have with your email program) don't show things in realtime, you have to actually open up the feeds to read them, which completely defeats the purpose.

What they ARE good for is updating web-enabled applications.  A RSS feed is a smart way to send data to an auto-updating application.  The "web videos" app on vizio tvs are updated via rss, for example.  XBMC is also updated via rss.

It is the hidden gem of sites, but you know what to do with it.
Instead of reading 20 blogs every day, tabbloid.com collects all stories I like based on RSS links I enter, and serves all in a PDF newspaper during morning coffee.

This site has an RSS feed as well.  Check the link at the top of the page.  You can use it to track the most recent posts across forums.

I'm a big fan of Google Reader as a RSS aggregator.  It synchronizes between computers and mobile devices keeping track of what I have already read.  In addition to news I use it to track eBay and Craigslist searches as well as Podcasts.

Please explain. I really need to get easier access to the uggliest and most user unfriendly website of the world (Ebay), and I'm really curious how you tame the dumbest and most oldfashioned site in the word (CL).

I use it for craigslist. You can RSS exact searches. I have an RSS feed on my igoogle page, and every time i open up my web browser, i can check craigslist for all the items on CL I am looking for in about 10 seconds.

You just make the exact search you want on Craigslist (be sure to refine it as much as possible. Like my arcade search is something like: Arcade - fire -xbox -playstation -"fisher-price")

Once you got the search putting the results you want, click the rss button on the bottom of the screen. Copy the web page link, not the body, and paste it into your RSS program. Viola, you will now have an updated feed of your search.

I have never used it for ebay, mostly because I get email alerts for that site. Time is usually not so much of the essence, so a daily update is good for me. The few items I am desperately looking for, I get an instant email alert on.

Well put Vigo.  It works basically the same for both sites.

I also use RSS to follow people on Twitter.
