Dreamcast Battery?
« on: September 18, 2003, 10:10:41 am »
My Dreamcast recently stopped remembering the date. I opened it up and found the CMOS battery was corroded...so I pulled it. Now for my question. Does anyone know if I can replace the battery in the Dreamcast with a generic CMOS battery (eg. Maxell CR2032 (3v)--have a few laying around). The battery I pulled is a SANYO ML2430 (3v). I realize it won't fit exactly the same. I'm not concerned with that as I bent the posts pretty badly removing the battery anyway. Thanks in advance.

A 3V battery is a 3V battery. The only difference is that the one in the Dreamcast was rechargable.

I realize a battery is a battery is a battery buuut...The CR 2032 is also a CMOS battery hence rechargable (so no difference there)...what I was wondering was whether the charge rate (current draw) of the CR2032 vs. the original would cause a problem. <---Sorry 'bout that big 'ole run on sentence. I should have been more specific with my concerns in my original post (must have sounded like a knucklehead from the simplistic answer I got).

Anyway, I put it in. Hopefully there won't be a problem. Thanks for tryin'.
 ;)

Oops...I did some research (should have done that first), and it appears the CR 2032 is not rechargable (yes I really AM a knucklehead). Which still leaves me with a delima. If the DC is expecting a rechargabel battery (and sending a trickle charge) then won't the battery be damaged by the console?  ???

the cr-2032's are rechargable?

does that mean that If I plug in an old motherboard with a old powersupply, and put in a dead CR-2032 battery, it'll act as a battery recharger for my VMU's?

Pull a year and a half strike- it's over 4eva..
besides, WHL rocks!

I got to thinking about the trickle charge issue not long after I posted, not sure if that would cause troubles. If it does, it's only $30 to get another DC.

I think getting the same model of rechargable battery would probably be best though. Do a Froogle search for the model number of the battery.

Anyone find out anything more on this issue?  I ask because my DC is now exhibiting the same behavior as was described previously (I have to set the Time/Date every time I power the DC on).  Another Dreamcast may only be $30, but I'd rather not have to replace my DC every 7 months (I got mine in April).  I'll open mine up and see what the search engine gods have to say about it.

Here a site that takes the repair a different route:
