Grappling with Displays in Canada and a 12" Vertical on LCD's
« on: November 28, 2011, 12:36:46 pm »
I had chimed in on another post about displays in Canada.  Like many here I've been bouncing around the various options for displays.  I was looking at the Makvision/Weiya CRT options but they're only available in the US so after $300 to land it here in Canada that option was out.  I thought about CRT TV's but after playing MAME through the years on my regular TV's I'm not sure I want to accept some of the trade-offs.  The display is just not good enough.  So I've been getting more used to the LCD options and I've got it down to 2:

  • buy a Dell 20" 2007FP - 16.1" x 12.1" viewing size
  • buy a 26" from Nieman displays that's 23" x 12 7/8" viewing size

I'm still grappling with the 12-13" vertical.  Can someone tell me that this looks ok?  I'm worried that vertical games are going to look tiny and the display is going to look strange in my UAII cabinet from North Coast.  I keep thinking that with almost 27" x 25" available area, can't I do any better?

85% of the width but only 50% of the height -- that kind of sucks. :banghead:

As someone mentioned in another post -- I feel a long ways off from my white whale.  Maybe the $300 in shipping, duties, and brokerage will be worth it to get the 24.4" x 20.6" area covered with the Makvision/Weiya option...

Here's an attached drawing showing the options with viewable display areas and relevant pricing.

Are you in the GTA? If so, check out https://www.theplaydiumstore.com/t-contact.aspx?id=7

Their site doesn't list monitors, but when I was there last week he was selling Makvision 27" for around $500. Just call and ask for parts.

Thanks Brad -- Just talked to Rick and it's an analog.  No dice there.

Playdium is a great tip -- I"ll try there.

I've come full circle back at the Makvision/Weiya option.  I originally focused on the Xgaming 29" Makvision M2929 and now I'm looking at the Happ part#49-2717-00 Makvision 27" VGA/SVGA which are the same.

Now I'm waiting for the guys at Playdium/Starburst to get stock or a quote from Happ.  Somehow I think that the Playdium guys will land it cheaper than I can.

Thanks for the help everyone!  Discovering the CCGC website was a real help as well.  Big thanks to EvanW!
