Choping edges of TV to fit in cab
« on: October 31, 2011, 04:50:37 pm »
Hi all,
I'm considering sawing off the plastic case edges (~1 inch per side) off a TV that is slightly too wide for my cab instead of de-casing.  I plan to first drill a hole and look inside to make sure I don't cut anything that isn't plastic.  I will leave the TV off for 24 hours before attempting this.  My questions are:
1. How dangerous is this?  (Do I need to worry about the same issues you need to think about when completely decaseing a tv?)
2. How safe is it to leave a TV without sides in my cab?  (Do I need to cover them with plexi or another material?  Could this burn start a fire, etc?)
Thanks,

1.  You're gonna die.  I hope you write a will before you attempt this.

All I can picture in my head is someone taking a sawzall to their TV and it getting ridiculously out of control. Why not just decase it? What I picture you doing in my head seems much more dangerous then just taking off a few screws and lifting the plastic off.

why not take the screws off, take the back cover off, and see what you can trim?

Just get a different TV.  There are some models out there than aren't much more than a couple of inches wider than the tube itself.  That's more than enough to fit properly inside any cabinet.  If it still won't fit then you probably just need to get a smaller display.

I agree with these guys.  Would probably be safer to decase it.

but if you still do it anyway, use a Sawzall and post a video of the process (:
