Strange MAME issue....

Hey all,

Got a strange one here.
I start up Hyperspin, use mame, 2nd player 3rd button doesn't work.
OK I open up menu and see that all player 2 controls are grayed out.  Even the directions are set to none even though they work.  Now I can't set player 3 button.  Alright..... I exit hyperspin and go direct to mame.  Now I can change button 3 but all is still grayed out.  Test it and it's fine.  Start up Hyperspin and it's back to non working.  What the hell....
What does a grayed out control mean and is there a master reset for mame controls?   ??? ??? ???
