Using a router on a cab already put together?
« on: October 27, 2011, 02:47:41 am »
Long time lurker first time poster.

I have been building my first bar top cab for a few weeks now and not following any instructions at all i have come across a bit of a problem. I assembled my cab and forgot to cut the slot for the t molding.

My question is, How easy is it to cut the slot out in a assembled cab and what methods would you use? (I own a plunge router) Or even any other methods like painting rather than using t molding? I would rather not paint though unless result would look good.
Im a little paranoid i will mess it up. I should also mention im using 12mm MDF.

Thanks

If you lay the cab on its side you can get at alot of the front surfaces and the top if require.  Since the surfaces on the front are not all on the same plane there maybe some that will be hard to get a full slot.   Setup your router on a piece of scrap and get it right on before doing your cab.   Make sure you lock down the plunge router as you do not want the slot to drift.  Not sure about all the surfaces that you want t-molding on but you should be able to get most of them.

Thanks for the reply. Basically i just want to do both sides next the the bezel and up past the marquee right the way around to the back side of the cab.

Another quick question. For the slot cutting piece the width needs to be 1.6mm but what about the depth? Is it 5mm? Is all t molding the same as in how much you poke into the slot?

Thanks

Never measured my slot but the slot cutter you get from the t-molding sellers work fine.   I think they cut a bit deeper than you need so that the t-molding all fits.  There is no choice on the slot cutters for depth so I assume that they are all fixed at the proper depth.
