I currently have a Nokia N95-8GB and haven't been able to find a suitable replacement, mostly because of the onboard maps & voice directions.
It's been my only camera, mp3 player, etc, etc, etc forever.
While doing some refurbing, I broke the volume up button and lost the plunger that activates it.   :-\
Now I might be forced to get a new phone.

I use the GPS on my motorcycle and fairly often end up somewhere with no signal, so the maps must be onboard.
It also has to give directions by voice because I don't want to be looking at the screen instead of the road.
(I have it wired to the speakers on my bike and also when it rains, I put it inside the tank bag)
The N95 allows me to play music and use the GPS at the same time and adjust the volume for each independently.

Also needs to have a camera comparable to a standalone digital camera.  A flash is a must.

Another thing I'm curious about is the newer versions of slingbox mobile.
I currently have a slingbox AV (supposedly no longer supported) and an older version of slingbox mobile on my phone that allows me to stream my home tv to the phone using AT&T's network (I'm grandfathered in for unlimited data).
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that newer versions limit you to using wifi.
Anyone using slingbox with Android or Iphone confirm?

It's old, but it's unreal how much stuff this phone could do without paying anything extra.
I could get a replacement for $100-150, but I hate to stick with an ancient unsupported OS.
For $50 more I could sign a new contract and get an Iphone 4S, but I'd be forced into the "Iphone plan" and lose my unlimited data forever.
I'm afraid of upgrading and ending up with less functionality.   ???

The camera and maps on the Nokia E7 & N8 look good, but nobody is supporting the OS (audible, rhapsody, slingbox, etc).  (I also believe that microsoft is going to run Nokia into the ground.
...all they seem to care about is MS Office, which is absurd.  Any smart phone can edit office documents...and nobody would ever want to use a phone for that unless they absolutely had to)

I want one device for a phone, camera, gps, mp3 player, etc. that works as well as separate standalone devices.
Any recommendations for me to check out?

  • I glow in the dark.
Being an UK user I cannot comment on US data plans.  While I was out in Nevada in July I tried to get some kind of plan for Data and it was T mobile unlimited Internet and that didn't work properly with my Sammy.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S, and now it was considered an iPhone killer thus obsolete.  I would look at getting a Samsung Galaxy S II, it is a dual core CPU with Tegra 2.  Its s*it hot.  Has your flash, maps, etc.

But in the UK we do not have the data plan issues you guys have.  So I would be getting a contract with the (whatever it is called over there) Galaxy 2 and a 1gb data contract.  I have 500mb and I rarely use 300 MB and I use the phone like 90% of the day.   The camera is a good one, actually I have been taking respectable shots with it lately.  All my previous phones have you wait still for 5 seconds to get a good picture, where the Galaxy takes the best 3-5 shots automatically.  I like the Panoramic facility.  HD Video is a dream.  No more Handy-Cam!

Took this picture whilst on holiday:

Any android or iphone can do onboard maps, but you either need to pay a lot extra for a dedicated GPS app or I think there are ways to get it for free (legally) with some effort.  Coming from the N95 you'd probably like android, and any decent android phone can do 95-100% of what you're looking for.  I don't know about slingbox but it seems to be the trend to only allow data-intensive apps over wifi.  I only do local video on my phone because streaming is very hit and miss over 3g.

I think there may be a decent provider (or two) out there that still offers unlimited data to new customers.  If you decide to buy a new phone your best bet is probably an android on one of those carriers.

Voice search on Android has really impressed me in the past, and the voice-to-text feature has been handy for replying to emails/text when i couldn't type a reply.

Looks like the Slingbox client for android is around $30USD.

Given your history with the Nokia, an android phone is going to make you feel the most at home, i think.

Checked into the slingbox and the old Slingbox AV that I have is not compatible with the current version of slingbox mobile.
So I'd have to buy a newer slingbox +$30 for the app.  (the old app came free with my N95)
I don't use it very often, so I could probably do without it, but it's neat to be able to watch any channel while waiting for a haircut, etc.

Geocache Navigator will cost me $5.99 per month. (It currently costs me nothing)

In light of that, I ordered replacement parts for my old N95 (only came to $10 w/shipping).
It's pretty small surface mount stuff, so I'm not sure I will succeed in the repair, but it's worth a try.

If it doesn't work out, I'll probably go with the Galaxy S II.

Thanks for the input!

  • Intellivision Rocks!
Not that it matters now, but Google Maps has a new(er) cache option.  I havent played with it much, but its supposed to work when you dont have a strong signal or at all for the data connection.  If you do go with a newer phone, it may be something to check into.
