Arcade Monitor flash or surge?
« on: October 11, 2011, 05:48:39 pm »
Brand New here and in need of help.

Just bought a Mortal Kombat 3 machine. The monitor is surging or flashing when ever the control panel on the front of the machine is tapped or if your playing the game and you get on the joystick or buttons hard it surges. If you don't touch the machine it plays great. If you tap it surge, tap flash, tap surge. It only does it when the panel gets a little jar. Seems to me like a lose wire or ground. But it's my first machine and to be honest I'm lost and don't know jack about arcade machines! Please help.

Thanks

Have you took a look inside? looks to me that somenthing might be loose , or a ground problem.Look for any loose wires also.

Is it an easy fix. How do I know if I have a remote board and what's it do? Is the monitor chassis the board right under the monitor and if so is that one of the shock you big time boards??

Thanks

i would suggest reading some posts here on bad solder joints, the chassis is another term for the main monitor pcb
most likely area of bad solder will be the flyback transformer but tbh they can occur anywhere
so you need some knowledge about how to remove a chassis safely and a keen eye to check for bad solder joints

as for remote board,i can tell you by the model of the monitor or even a photo

Monitor Zenith
G-A63ADG25X
04RC0105-009

Chassis has
Model  #
25K7193
Wells-Gardner Electronics

My machine was a MK3 Kit. It has the manual included.

I'm including some pics. Seems like I have a lot of unused connections and wires going on.

Also when I plug in the game there is no test menu it just goes right to the game.

Manual says you can use buttons on inside of coin door to access menu's but I have no buttons. So how do I get to the menu?

I'm way lost here.

Thanks!

Your cabinet is a conversion from what appears to be a Neo-Geo, so there are no volume up/down buttons (those were Midway specific).  Most of the Neo-Geos I've seen have a big test button mounted to the top of the coin vault.  If you look straight in through the top coin door, it should be pretty conspicuous.  It's some giant odd thing; it looks like it was probably intended to be used as a door sensor on an alarm system or something.  This should bring up the test/operator menu, and you can adjust the volume from in there.

If you don't have that button, take a look at your JAMMA harness and see if there's any wires hooked up to the appropriate location (15 - parts side).  If so, trace it and see where it goes.  If not, just whack that pin with a wire to one of the many ground pins on JAMMA, and that'll bring up the menu; you might consider installing a button in that case, too.

Went looking for the test button. Could not find it. Went looking for the 15 part side couldn't find it. But found something weird. My cab is running MK3 but one of the (proms) (L2.0) did I say that right? Says Mortal Kombat 3 ULTIMATE. Could I have Ultimate and it's just a matter of hooking something up different to get it to work. Please says it's so!

Check out the pics

Look harder on you JAMMA connector.  It's just pin 15 (parts side means which side of the board the contact is on - the opposite would be pin 'S').  It has to physically exist :)

Another question? In my previous posted I listed that one of the roms has Ultimate written on it (U131) I got the test menu up and it says this rom is bad turns red all others green. Is this the rom that converts MK3 to Ultimate? If so.... How do I fix it. Is this a Ultimate MK 3 Board. Was Ultimate just a rom upgrade to the original MK3 board??

THANKS!
