Psykoholic's First MAME Cabinet
« on: September 27, 2011, 12:12:37 am »
Hello.  I've been reading this site for a week or two now and just received my new copy of Project Arcade today!  So, with all the amazing inspiration here, I figured I'd post my control panel mock up I've been working on for comments/criticisms.

It is 32.5" by 16" and inspired by CPs I've seen on this site.  Here is a pic, please give any suggestions!

Thanks!

I really like this layout! It's basic, but very detailed. I love the design though, keep it up.

The only suggestion i have is maybe moving your 4 way joystick to the left a bit. If you play any golden tee or bowling games you might find that it would get in the way. Love the art!

The only suggestion I have is maybe adding a 4th button on the left of the bottom row. If you play any Neo-Geo games you might find that it's easier to play with the original MVS buttons layout. Love the art!

+1 on darcyp, a little room between the 4 way and the two buttons will not affect gameplay and give more clearance for proper trackballin'.

Thanks for the feedback!  Okay, I've tweaked it a little and moved the 4-way as suggested.  Do you guys think this is far enough?  I'm trying for a symetrical layout, but obviously have room to move it more if I need to.  I only bought 24 buttons, so I will hold off on the 7th button for the 8-ways at the moment, but have room to add them later if I miss them.

Also I've played around with the art and have 3 ideas.

The first is a template I made for the layout which I plan on using for construction purposes.

Next to that I added a flame border and the flames on direction arrows and around trackball have gradients.  The 4-way direction arrows are red here.

Bottom left is sans flame border w/gradients, yellow 4-way arrows and red 8-way arrows.

Bottom right is all line art and silhouettes, no gradients.  And red player 1 arrows and yellow player 2 arrows.

So any suggestions or opinions on the art or layout?  Thanks again!
