Help Setting up cocktail table 2Player with screen flip
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:27:12 pm »
Hello, I'm new and purchased a dream arcades cocktail kit. I'm very computer savy (I built custom hardware)

I have no problem with getting single side 1Player rom's working (even if controls not properly assigned),

I have followed the how-to's and got mame and mala running with the .ini's all downloaded and setup in mala options.
I used winIPAC and have everything mapped for both players. I wrote down the keyboard outputs for both sides.

I'm using the single board IPAC mini USB. I have both 1P and 2P controls all mapped out properly.

What I'm having trouble with is for instance ms.pacman. I do 2 player, and on player 2, the joystick won't work on the 2P side.

Can anyone direct me to the proper howto, wiki, thread on these setups?

Thanks.

mandatory pic: still setting up software.

also,

I loaded Elevator Action (classic I know)

and the buttons for shoot didn't work. I have controls.ini setup in mala. etc and only the joystick worked.

I'm obviously missing something

Do you have your roms set in cocktail mode?
Start up ms pac man.
does the screen actually flip for player 2?  If not, then the rom itself is not in cocktail mode, and thus will not use the 2nd set of controls for player 2.

You would need to hit the TAB button, go into the dipswitch menu and select cocktail for the cabinet type and then restart the game.

If the screen DOES flip for player 2 and the controls on P2's side still don't work, then hit the TAB menu again and go to the controls menu and change P2's inputs to use the controls physically on P2's side of the machine.

This is a MAME setup issue, and has nothing to do with mala.

Thanks for the reply. When I get home from work I'll give the tabbing a try. Currently the rom isn't in cocktail mode. By TAB menu you mean hit my keyboard's TAB key, correct?

yes.  it's the control menu when in MAME.  You can get to virtually every option in MAME from there, and any changes you make are sticky in that they are saved in the game's .ini file for the next time the game is loaded.  For things like dipswitch settings, you *must* exit MAME and re-start the game for those settings to take effect.  Things like joystick changes and button reassignments take effect immediately.

The ROM not being in cocktail mode gives me a 99% hope that that is the reason player 2's joystick/buttons are not being recognized, which makes sense;  you're playing the game as if it were on an upright machine, thus there is only 1 set of controls.
