Q regarding de-casing an LCD TV
« on: September 20, 2011, 01:11:54 pm »
First, I have just come to the realization that the Sony Trinitron TV that was gifted to me will not be the best 'fit' for my cabinet.  Thus, I have revised my plans slightly, and will be installing a 32" LCD TV, a la this one.  My question is this.  As their specifications say it is 30 1/2" horizontally, and 20" vertically, what can I expect this to change to when/if I decase the TV?

I have modified my specifications to fit the TV - just - and would personally prefer to reduce the size of the screen enclosure further, if at all possible.  What I am looking for is anyone's educated opinion on what I might see when I remove the screen from the enclosure.  (Also, if you have an "OMG DON'T DO IT!" moment, please enlighten me.  If it's a huge mistake - i.e. you lose the mounting screws on the back if you decase - then I may have to modify my measurements even further.)

Any help is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Not worth the hassle if you ask me.  If you think about it, the main reason people decase CRT's is that the bezel's tend to be pretty big and the case ads dpeth.  In an LCD there isn't much of a bezel, and you won't save much on depth, and depth shouldn't be an issue anyway considering how thin they are.

Good point, there.  After careful consideration, it is worth the extra expense in replacing my 40lb TV with a nice, light LCD.  I can say that this cab is becoming a behemoth of construction, sooner rather than later.  Besides, it's the damn future.  I'm sure my cab wouldn't have the world's (or Mars') last CRT, now would it?

Light?  You must have at least 500lbs of MDF on that sucker, what's an extra 50lb tv going to matter  ;D

I think it matters when the top is that much heavier than the bottom.  Maybe.  Regardless, I have made yet more adjustments to my math - and will now be going with a 24" LCD, since the 30" one would mean remanufacturing the sides...  ...which isn't going to happen.
