Not really a control question... but none the less...
« on: September 11, 2003, 05:44:46 pm »
I've never read anywhere exactly why Tekken (and the subsequent Tekken series of games) are not emulated in MAME?

Does anyone have a technical explanation as to why?

Are there any Tekken rom dumps and/or emulators out there?

Zinc emulates a tekkan.

Another option is to use ePSXe to play the tekken 1-3 playstation version.

How faithful are the PS versions compared to the Arcade?

I'd really like to have a working Tekken 1 and 2 cab(s) in my home, but I don't want brain-damaged version of them.

If I could find a T1 and T2 cab for sale somewhere close by, I'd go buy it. :(

In general fighting games in the arcade are fairly close to console version.  There may be slight differences in graphics and even slighter differences in gameplay.

I wouldn't go that far.  Mind you this is from a person that absolutely HATES the tekken series and I can tell a big diff between the ps1 version and the arcade.  Namely the arcade is faster because it had a slightly better processor and the home version looks better because of larger storage space.

As for why it's not emulated in mame, I can't even run S.T.U.N. Runner on my p4 1.5...   maybe it's just not fast enough.  But then I guess there's Killer Instinct that's been too slow for quite a while too...

I think the most likely thing is some company has asked them not to emulate it, or the hardware is too complicated.

Well the namco arcade sound chip isn't emulated yet(and never will be unless somone finds info on it), so ALL namco 3d arcade games lack sound at this point.  I think that's the biggest reason, although dancing eyes just got into mame (sans sound)  which runs on the same hardware as tekken/tekken2.  A person should also note that it runs at about 1/6th the speed it does on zinc, so it's kind of like crusin being added.  It's in there, but next to no-one can actually play it.

I guess we'll just have to wait for some multi-terrahertz processors to come out, so we can play our old 90's arcade favorites.    ::)
