G05-801 top and right jammed toward the middle
« on: September 07, 2011, 12:11:03 am »
I have capped this monitor, replaced big blues, and the bottle caps.  I have also recapped the Asteroids board, checked for shorting on the bottle caps, and reflowed every joint in the monitor.  Before all of this, the right half of my screen was missing, until it warmed up and then the monitor worked fine.  Now, as you can see from the test screen, the top and right is pushing toward the middle.  Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,
Randel

I would first verify the +/-15v rails at the game board first. Check this right at the op amps on pins 4/8. Check supply pins on the DACs and verify everythings ok there.

After that (when it all checks out and the issue is still there), check the supply rails for the monitor's deflection. If that checks out ok, I'd be looking for leaky deflection driver/output transistors.

Well, I plugged in a working board and the monitor is doing the same thing, so I know this is a monitor issue. I noticed smoke coming from the lower board of the G05 and R103 was smoking.  I replaced it with a 1k, 1 watt 5% (though the book calls for 390 ohm, 1 watt 5%) because I pulled a 1k, 1w, 5% out of it and R102 is a 1k, 1w, 5%. Now my spot killer is on, so now I am going to pull the deflection board and resolder the damn thing 1 more time.

Ok, next time make a note that you tried a known good game board with no change. Since everythings squashed over to one side, check the power rails first. Then you'll have to go thru the deflection circuitry to see what is causing the image skew.
