Is it a bad idea to have a fan blowing on the chassis?
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:25:50 pm »
Like everybody, I would like my monitor to last as long as possible. I thought I could install a computer fan next to chassis, blowing on it. The fan would be fixed to the cabinet and would have its own power source. This way, I think, it would be better for the chassis in the long run.

I think the downside would be dust acumulating faster. But don't mind cleaning it with compressed air once in a while.

My main concern would be if some parts need to run at a certain temperature (like the guns, I don't know) and a fan could be bad for that...

What do you think?

BTW, I have a WG k7000 and k7400.

It won't hurt anything.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

Aside from possible interference on the monitor, I think that would be a great idea. Please report back here if you do install a fan.

Good news. No interference.

Seems like overkill to me. The only exception here is color vector games...particularly the ones using the Wg6100 monitor. Those need all the cooling help they can get.

A fan on a 7000 monitor ain't absolutely necessary, but if you have one on it, I'd suggest pointing it at the L side of the chassis where the flyback, horiz output, and v reg are. The parts used for the v reg and h-out are not as stout as the older style to-3 case ones used on the GO7 and 4600 and tend to fail due to heat buildup.

A fan in the upper vent of the cab blowing out would prolly be just as good....maybe better. That way you exhaust out the warm air instead of blowing the warm air at the monitor. My cab is set up that way and it never gets warm in the top part. The lower part does due to the PC stuff building up heat and the design of the cab. Its a drawer type cab so heat can build under the drawer area despite fans blowing air across the board. Fricken video card runs stupid hot....

I think espacially MAME cabinets deserve more attention to air flow then regular arcades. I think if there's a pc in there, for sure you need at least one fan.
