G07 Monitor - Bumped my head and now acting up
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:12:07 pm »
I have an old JAMMA cabinet (Time Killers when I bought it).  I had converted it to MAME for a while, but now I'm converting it back to Time Killers for sale.  I pulled everything out and reconnected the Time Killers board and all was well.  While I was working on mounting the PCB, I bumped my head on the monitor neck and now I'm getting strange sync issues (see attached picture).  I installed a cap kit not that long ago, so I think it should be ok from that perspective.  I inspected all of the solder joints and they look ok.  What I have not done is start messing with the controls for fear of making it worse.

My question to the group is whether adjusting controls is likely to fix this issue?  If so, what controls should I attempt to adjust?  If not, what might be going on?  I don't want to spend any more money if possible, as I'm just trying to sell the cabinet.  However, the cabinet with a working game is definitely worth a bit more.

Thanks,
Craig

Yes.  I removed the neck card to look at the components and connection.  I then put it back on and made sure it was tight.  I find the whole thing bizarre.  Any other thoughts of things that I can/should try?    It doesn't seem like bumping the neck board would cause it to go wonky in this way.

Thanks for any help.

Its a H sync problem. The neck board has nothing to do with this. Trace out yer video wiring and make sure the sync lines are where they should be.

You may have some cracked solder at the header pins for the video inputs as well. Wrenching the wiring a bit may have brought on the issue.

You said it was a G07 in the post topic. All RGB monitors only run color signals to the neck board. Sync is handled on the main board or H/V card if its a 4600 "card" monitor. You may try diddling the horiz freq pot and see if that brings it back into sync. If the H sync isn't there then adjusting that won't do anything.

Yes.  I'm 99% certain it is a G07.  I remember that from a while ago when I did the cap kit and the pictures online appear to look the same and appears to match the pictures here... http://www.therealbobroberts.net/go7-1.html  .

I can attempt to adjust the horizontal frequency.  Is there a chance I can hurt the monitor worse than it already is?

I ran the horizontal frequency adjust throughout its range with no appreciable difference.  Is there anything else I might have done unrelated to the neck of the monitor?  Is it possible I messed up the JAMMA board in some way that would cause this behavior?

Hold the phone... I just figured it out.  It appears that I managed to flip a couple of the DIP switch settings in an attempt to mount the PCB in the cabinet.  The important one being positive versus negative sync.  Flipping the switch fixed things right up.  My bad.  The monitor still needs some adjustment, but at least it is working now and I will be able to sell it for a bit more.  I guess I associated the problem with my head bumping and didn't think of anything else.

I do have a couple of follow-up questions for anyone that might be able to answer...

First... I no longer can find the mounting hardware for the Time Killers JAMMA board.  I'd like to get this thing put together yet this weekend if possible.  Does anyone have any good ideas of how to mount this PCB without damage using simple pieces that I could get somewhere like Home Depot?

Second... What is a reasonable price to list a working Time Killer JAMMA cabinet?

Thanks again for everyone's help thus far,
Craig

You can screw the board to the cabinet without teh mounting deals. I just use some rubber "feet" between the board and the cab wall. Just snug the screws down so the rubber just compresses a little bit.

Price will depend on what cabinet it is, monitor size overall condition, etc. Time Killers was never that great of a game earnings wise. I built a couple back when the kit first hit the market. They didn't do all that well IIRC. So I doubt the board has any real value. The main selling point will have to be the cab itself for the most part.

Any idea how to determine the original cabinet?  I'm not sure if I will find anyone locally that really knows and I'd rather just deal with local sales.

I also ran into trouble earlier with screws... #6 wood screws didn't quite fit through the PCB, but #4 screws were all too short.  I was figuring I'd need #4 screws at least 1.5 inches long to get the necessary clearance plus feet.

Well, its a conversion. So the cab could be just about anything. Post a pix maybe?

That cab looks familiar, but I can't think of what it was originally. Anyway....its an old 19" cab so I wouldn't expect to get rich off it. Depends on who wants it, for what, and how bad.

Thanks.  Probably just going to list it at $100 and hope I can find someone interested locally to avoid shipping and dealing with all of that.

Oh shipping that thing is def not an option. It would cost 2-3 times what its worth just to crate and ship.

Thats what is used to be.....a Gottlieb/Mylstar Mach 3 laserdisc game.

That looks like the one.  Thanks for the links.  It was helpful, as there was a 120V outlet inside for the video disk player I was able to use for my MAME hardware.  Was that standard for most of these cabinets or did I just get lucky with one that was built as a video disk game?

It was probably intended as a service outlet for plugging in a work light or soldering iron. Fairly common in certain mfgr's cabs and especially in pinballs.
