Balancing sound and graphics... what are my options?
« on: September 01, 2011, 01:32:33 pm »
OK, so I am running mame on an old XP machine (P4), and when I turn tripplebuffer on in mame.ini, it corrects the messed up scrolling in games like Jr. Pac Man and the level scrolling up in Quester, but the sound takes a major hit and stutters.

I have browsed around looking for solutions, but have no found anything concrete yet. New video card, new audio card don't give much improvement.

So,

1. Anyone know of a solution?

2. I have "acquired" an old mame romset... 0.72 I think... is it worth trying to see if it fixes this (currently running .142). No game I want to run is newer than say, 1989, except for DKII, but losing that doesn't break my heart.

3. The bad scrolling happens on my LCD, but I will have a TV in my cab hooked up via composite... I assume the jagged scrolling will happen on it too, or is it an LCD issue?

Anyone who has worked through this in the past, any advice is welcome!
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

The issue stems from trying to display a game running at a framerate other than 60Hz. On a TV with composite inputs you're likely stuck having to run the games at 60Hz.

In that scenario the best option is probably going to be running a build of mame with the 'soundsync' feature, and then using the 'syncrefresh' feature to force the emulation to speed up/down to match 60hz. This will result in the pitch of the sound being slightly higher or lower than it's suppose to be in order to match the timing of the TV.

Hmm. Googled 'Mame soundsync' without much luck. Is this the kind of thing that Groovymame is good at?

Ah, thank you sir!  Will give it a try. I have maybe 4 games out my 30-ish on my cab that have janky scrolling, but would love to keep them in the game list.

the real magic of groovymame is the modeline generation with an rgb(15 or 31khz) monitor and an ATI card. native resolution and refresh rate on every game.

Does cabmame have nonag patch rolled in? From what I gather Groovymame does.

I lose tripplebuffer on in mame.ini, it corrects the messed up scrolling in games equal Jr. Pac Man and the even scrolling up in Quester, but the sensation takes a educatee hit and stutters.

I individual browsed around superficial for solutions, but human no pioneer anything existent yet. New recording roll, new audio lineup don't ply often shift.

So,

1. Anyone ---fudgesicle--- of a result?

2. I bed "acquired" an old mame romset... 0.72 I expect... is it designer disagreeable to see if it fixes this (currently functioning .142). No gamy I requisite to run is newer than say, 1989, omit for DKII, but losing that doesn't ruin my intuition.

3. The bad scrolling happens on my LCD, but I will soul a TV in my cab crooked up via flower...

Now that's a fascinating spam technique.. I guess this has either been run though an english->foreign language->english translation or it's some kind of random word replacement?

The changing of "know" to "---fudgesicle---" is rather amusing, given the historical context of the two words.
