Arcade monitor decision
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:42:27 pm »
Hi, I'm about to rebuild my arcade and wanted to first decide on the monitor.

Can anyone explain the benefits or drawbacks of a CRT such as Makvision Tri-Mode Flat Monitor http://na.suzohapp.com/monitors/49271500.htm?

I guess:
+ Nicer picture for low resolution arcade games?
+ Can buy a fitted bezel for my Ultimate Arcade II cabinet?
+ Supports more or better gun types?

- Only VGA support for front end and windows administration
- Won't run PC games very well that require higher resolution
- Requires special graphics card which limits performance of general game play?

Can anyone confirm any of these assumptions?  I'd be perfectly happy with a standard LCD if
1) There is a solution to create a professional-looking bezel that fits my UA 2 cabinet
2) I am not limited to lower quality (accuracy, range) gun choices

if you're thinking about going that route for a pure emulation machine, i would consider going with this:
http://www.xgaming.com/store/arcade-parts-and-accessories/product/weiya-29-flat-screen-crt-arcade-monitor/

it's the same size screen, but in 31khz only, going up to 800x600, which is great for a lot of PC games. You can run games in mame and other emulators at exactly 2X their native resolution and native framerates with GroovyMame, as well as running higher res arcade games like various Dreamcast ports at their native (or higher) resolutions with no interlacing.

and it's cheaper.

I also have an Ultimate Arcade 2  cab that I'm thinking of upgrading the screen in. I'm considering a Samsung 24" 1080p television, but I do have other low res arcade boards that I run in this machine as well, so it's not emulation only.

What issues might I run into hacking a neo geo, and a couple of cps2 units into this lcd?

The biggest downside to the Makvision monitor you linked to is that it's analog. Thus, you cannot easily switch between resolutions without messing with analog adjustments. It's a major pain, and you won't want to do it.

Also, it's nearly impossible to find a bezel for that screen that fits the UAII.

I would really consider getting an LCD from Nieman Displays or the display cotmm68030 linked. Either one will be much more versatile and you'll generally be happier.

Yeah the makvision i linked to is a digital screen, so it saves the settings between various resolutions. it switches resolutions very quickly as well. I'd guess it's around 800-900ms.
