EAT IT, domain squatter!
« on: September 08, 2003, 09:41:05 pm »
When I registered arcadeparadise.org back in 2000, I wanted to have arcadeparadise.com also, just to avoid confusion between the names.  As it turned out, arcadeparadise.com was being sat on by a squatter - the site resolved to some kind of 'DOMAIN NAMES NOW" site in the UK.  I contacted the person who owned it saying that I was interested in buying it.  Bear in mind that this is for my hobby of cabinet building - I'm not trying to make money off of this, and I told the person this.  He replied with "Make me an offer."

I thought about it for a little bit and wrote back with an offer of $50.  Like I said, I didn't need the name for business purposes or anything, and hey, that's $50 more than this guy has currently by just sitting on it and doing nothing with it, right?

He writes back and says that he's planning on offering arcadeparadise.com with a bunch of other domain names in an auction, and that he will be opening the bidding at $10,000.

TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS?!??  Uh, that was a little more than my offer of $50.  So that was that.

I just checked the whois a few weeks ago, and whaddya know, arcadeparadise.com is available!  So I snatched it up and I'm just using it as a redirect to arcadeparadise.org.  The DNS seems to have propagated, so it's all peachy and working now.  So EAT IT, jerkass!  You could've made an easy $50 off of me!  NYAH NYAH!

They still make Hubba Bubba?

And I'm curious, SirP, what is the domain?

I've got the domains I wanted - at least, for now.

I had the same problem with 1up.com and 1up.net.  I ended up having to settle for 1uparcade.com, because both of those were taken, and neither would so much as send a reply to my offers to buy those domains.  At the time, neither one had a website associated with it, but 1up.com has now re-upped for another 5 years, and is now a headhunter site or something.  Wow, that makes sense -- nothing says job recruiting more than 1up... ???  1up.net is still dead, but doesn't expire until next year.

Way to go, Sasquatch squatters burn me up!  I loved hearing about all the a$$es way back when that thought they were going to make a quick milliion off a $35 domain investment by buying pepsi.com and other brand names etc, only to have the names wrenched away from them thru legal channels...heheh...  Not to mention all the folks who bought up every random useless 3-letter name imaginable (i.e. 1up.com) just to let them rot away for years.  Ah, the days when everyone thought the "information superhighway" (dorkiest cyber-term ever) was paved with gold...

It's not

"Sir" or
"Poonga"  or
"Sirp" or
"Pony Boy" and you got knighted by queen Elizibeth for singing a duet with Sir Elton.. But you wanted to change the names around a little?  or
"Ronga Ipos" and you wanted to just change the letters around?

Its always weird to find that people have like real names

Yeah it is funny, every time my wife and I see something with "Apollo" on it like a bike or a shop or something she says "oh look honey it's you". It's quite confusing lol.

Man, that is so what's wrong with the internet... well that and the glut of Viagra e-mail I've been getting.  But I pray for the day that the starry eyed dreamers stop thinking of the internet of a fool proof money dispenser.  How many more flashing pop-ups telling me I won a contest I never entered do I have endure before my wish is realized?  Probably a billion...
