What emulators for a Vertical cab?
« on: August 11, 2011, 12:41:39 pm »
Just started setting up the software for my vertical cab.  Maximus works well for a front end.   Mame works fine in vertical. Pinball VP and FP work great on a vertical screen.  Most of the other emulators I have are horizontal only.   Anyone have any suggestions for emulators that are suited for a vertical cab?

Thanks

Edit: VP works but is oriented upside down in my vertical cab.   The screen is mounted so ROR gets everything working in MAME but it looks like VP is ROL and thus upside down.  Did not find a way to change the rotation so dropped VP from my list instead of remounting the screen. :'( :'(

Depending on whether or not you have the horsepower to run them, NAOMI vertical shmups are awesome.

I'm using Makaron T12/5 to run them (some newer builds aren't as compatible)
It's running on a 2.9Ghz Athlon X3 triple core.
There is some slowdown, but it isn't too bad.

You might try Demul.  It's a lot easier to set up.
I didn't use it because the games had issues going fullscreen on a horizontal monitor, which won't be a problem for you.

There are the vertical Taito Type X games that have been cracked also.

Thanks for the info.   I probably do not have the HP for NAOMI shooters but that could change depending on how the new vertical cab turns out.

I found you can make No$GBA go vertical with a setting in the No$zoomer ini file. So that is another emu that I can run.

in my galaxian cab i use ArcadeOs. i also use advancemame. my computer is a athlon xp 900 i think...about 512mb ram and a 20 gb hard drive.. everything works great though. i also use the driver arcmon.sys to induce a low res from the computer. while it dosent have alot of graphics its menu is easy to use and you can find a vertical game list to take all the vert games and none of the horizontal games. oh yea my cab runs dos  not windows.

Thanks GMZombie I can already separate H and V games in mame.   Just looking for other emulators that support Vertical screen orientation.

Bob I think I asked this same question in another thread (and I think you commented there too).  My vertical cocktail cab is screaming for some non-mame action.  FP runs too slow to be enjoyable.

I don't remember much about the Vectrex, but surely there's an emulator that lets it run in rotated video mode like it's original vertical monitor.

Why don't you try a few of them out and let me know if any are worth my time

Looked into vectrex emulators but the recommended one was DOS based so I passed on trying to get it to run in my cab.

Shmupmame is a good optimizing emulator for arcade Shmups. It reduces the frame lag for a bunch of vertical shooters that normal mame lags on.
It's a subtle difference, but if you're hardcore enough, its definitely worth it.

Tried Shmupmame an it is nice but it is still Mame so it does not offer anything more than I already have in the cab.

Thanks  :D

Bumping this for a related question:
If a person was to use windows7 to rotate the desktop, are there emulators that would run in a vertical letterbox or would they be stretched vertically to fill the screen?
