VGA to RGB help
« on: August 06, 2011, 10:23:34 pm »
I just got a Wells Gardner K7000 and I'm trying to figure out how to connect it to a VGA card. It has 9 inputs for red, green, blue, ground, +hsync, +vsync, another ground, -hsync, and -vsync. The RGB and ground is obvious (although I'm not sure why there are two ground connections) but I'm confused about the h-and-vsync inputs. Why are there + and - inputs and how do I connect them to a VGA cable? Also, I read on the ultimarc website (http://www.ultimarc.com/monfaq.html) that hsync and vsync can be combined. Should that be done with this monitor? I'm new to arcade monitors and I would appreciate any help, thanks!

The + and - inputs are to let you adjust for which polarity sync signal you're using.  You only use one set of inputs.

PCs conventionally output separate positive sync signals, but many of the commonly used tools to get resolutions compatible with standard res arcade monitors (like Soft15khz) change it to negative sync.  I don't know off the top of my head what the ArcadeVGA defaults to.

Arcades wired for JAMMA by convention use composite (combined H/V) negative sync.

You can get something that resembles (but isn't perfectly) composite sync from separate sync signals in many, though not all, cases by just hooking the two wires up.  No reason to do that, here.

So, identify what method you will use the get the PC to output a compatible signal (note: NOTHING a PC will put out by default is compatible) and what polarity sync that will result in.  Choose the corresponding sync inputs.

Thanks, I understand now. So I don't need to combine h and v sync for composite sync because the monitor already has separate inputs for h and v sync.

Also, you say that nothing a PC will output by default will give me a compatible signal, but can't I just use the Soft-15khz tool and wire up VGA to RGB and it will work? I read in the manual for this monitor that it accepts anywhere from 1-5v signals so I shouldn't need any kind of other adapter, right?
