Hahaha. Oh man, I had to post this. Here's a voice mail I got from the owner of the pool service company I fired. The full story is in the description on Youtube:

Agreed. Although it seems the problem escalated to where it is largely because he could not let it go, so I doubt that's going to happen.

Wheres the recording of your call to them, which occurred after that email exchange. I'm guessing that you were anything but polite and reserved. The pool company was wrong to leave that message, however you seemed to be the one that pushed them to that point.

That's why I do my own pool. It's not that hard, and it's way cheaper than paying someone to do something I could do myself.

Oh, and for the record, I don't think his wife was out line in her emails. The phone call was out of line, sure, but you escalated the situation. Take pictures when the guy comes to kick your ass.

Well, he called and apologized just now. I'm in the process of taking the audio out of the original youtube video and uploading his apology voice mail (as he requested). Incidentally, I didn't have any voice communication with them--they left me a voice mail. That's the thing, everything I ever said to his wife was in the e-mails.

But, he just had a bad day and I'm totally willing to accept that as explanation enough. All's forgiven.

Well I really feel bad for the guy.

Now because of the "Reddit effect" people are going way out of line, sending them e-mails like crazy, calling them, using profanity, ACTUALLY talking ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about his wife, etc. It really sucks. This is so far beyond anything I wanted to happen to the poor dude.

Anyway I've been trying to audio swap the original video for freakin' hours now so that anyone who goes looking for it will just go to his apology voice mail, but Youtube sucks and still hasn't changed it. So it's going on private until it does.

Thanks Jim, actually that's how I got them up to Youtube--recorded them as mp3s from my phone, then used mp32u.net to convert them to a video.

For that guy's sake, it might be best to take the attachment down.

So you picked a fight with this guy through email and voicemail, got one, posted it in several places online trying to harm his reputation... even managed to get an apology from him... one of the sites is harrassing him despite evidence you're at least as much at fault as he is... and now you sorta feel bad?

Ah, High Horse Chad.

I didn't ever post this on reddit. That was someone taking it and running with it. I posted it on review sites, things that are relevant to his customer service record, like insiderpages. Would you do business with somebody who leaves a recording like that on someone's voice mail, regardless of whose fault you think it is? I certainly wouldn't, especially if the other side may have been gruff, but not profane. But I didn't want him to get hundreds of retaliatory, anonymous-style voice mails, e-mails, Facebook page vandalisms, etc., simply because he had a crap day.

So yes. NOW I feel--my word--"really" bad for the guy. Not "sorta."

Well, I really have no sympathy for either side of the battle. The pool guy was a ---tallywhacker---, and his apology was more him threatening Justin's manhood if he didn't post the apology up. If the correspondence is only those emails was all there was, then as a professional, he shouldn't have blown up over a smart-ass customer, he should be used to it. However, if I felt that someone insulted my wife, I would probably go over and beat them up too. However, I guess I just don't see enough evidence of any personal insult against his wife...

Justin, were you just fishing for a refund or something? I don't see why you wouldn't remain courteous and professional on your end, if you sincerely thought would could work something out for what you saw as crap job. All and all, why would you make such a big deal about such a small fee either, which obviously you could afford if you are paying for someone else to maintain your pool. If you were involved in getting the video on reddit, then that was a dick move as well, I am assuming there was some push, as my videos on youtube don't get noticed for months, and this only took a day for this video to make reddit.

Anyway, I can tell you feel bad, so I am not gonna sit and rub it in anymore. Both you and the backsplash pool guy got burnt. Live and learn, right?

You were acting like a dick and the owner's voicemail was out of line.

I hope I never have to deal with either one of you.

The only person who seems sensible in this whole mess is the owner's wife. Congrats on creating a shitstorm.

For me it was just mainly principle. I went and got my water tested--the thing that they were saying about phosphates being high wasn't true, they were in the normal range, according to the test--and I bought the required chemicals for $42.60. It took me like ten minutes. Now their normal rate for maintenance is $22/week including chemicals. Assuming the chemicals are like $10, then that's $12 for the trip charge, which is reasonable. Now we're up to $54.60 if you add that to the cost of my chemicals. So you're really gonna charge me the difference--$90-$54.60 = $35.40, for 15 minutes of extra work? That's over $140/hour. That was basically why I was skeptical. It seemed completely out of line to me.

Add to that, that the algae developed within a day or so after they came by the week prior (I saw it the morning of the second day after), and well, I just felt ripped off.

I don't take issue with his apology. He had a stressful day, week, and then that was a hell of a thing to wake up to. He sounds desperate and I didn't take his words so much as challenging my manhood as just being unable to find the proper words and being unsure of what my next move might be. As soon as "I want to apologize" came across the phone, I was already planning to post the apology call to Youtube--and then he asked me to do it later in the message. He now just called me back and asked me to just take that down too.

Hah well I definitely did yesterday.

The thing is, I just want it to be done, with minimal markup. Free market economics at work. I'm happy to pay for the service. I just got a quote on the gear replacement repair they also recommended which was more than $50 cheaper than their quote. Maybe I'm too hung up on what they were looking to charge, but that was why I reacted the way I did, over the top as it was.
