Terminator 2 Cabinet to ??? Project - [It's Alive]
« on: July 25, 2011, 08:02:10 pm »
About a year and a half ago I bought a bare bones Terminator 2 cab cheap.  No game, no monitor, and almost no wires left to speak of.  Since then it has been sitting in my garage waiting for me to get off my butt and do something with it.  The art was in bad shape and while I like the game I really don't want to keep the terminator theme.  This is going to go in our family room so I want to keep it somewhat kid friendly.  I have seen a few conversions of a T2 cabinet where they put the monitor right in front.  I love the original location of the monitor where it faces up and bounces off of a mirror.  I am going to keep that style.  There is this cool optical illusion that makes it look like the monitor is somehow floating behind the cab.

I bought a 26 inch LCD computer monitor for it but it just didn't look big enough and I could not find a way to make the picture flip horizontally for the mirror.  Mame will flip just fine but I really want to be able to see it correctly for Daphne, the front end, and maintenance.  So I have decided on a 27 inch tv with an RGB connector.

The whole cab needs work and I have finally made some progress.  I put on a coat of paint only to realize that I did not sand well enough so that is why the paint has new sanding marks in it.  I have the old mirror so that is cool but it looks as if someone dumped some sort of thick oil in parts of it and baked it on.  Other parts look like rust marks so I am planing on ordering a new one.

Any one have any ideas on what art might look good on it?

The CP on T2 is pretty high, flat, and small. How do you plan on re-doing it?

As for art and family friendly.. Pick one or two games that you enjoy and commission on of the various artists on the forums to draw family members as characters in the game in a style similar to the games original artwork.

I knew that it was a little high but I wan't sure how much.  I did some measurements and it looks like it is about 6 inches higher then most control panels.  I could probably angle it down a bit by removing some wood from the front.  As far as the size, I think it will be ok.  The original control panel hangs over a few inches giving arm rest room and the width is 25 inches.  Plenty of room for a street fighter layout and if I'm lucky I can squeeze a track ball in the middle.

It looks like this guy kept it at the standard height.  I wonder how it worked out for him.

The coin door was rusty and had a cracked coin return button.  The coin mechs were for tokens.  When I was a kid most of the arcade games that I got to play were in the pizza shops, sub shops, department store lobbies, and bowling allies.  They all took quarters so that brings back the most memories to me.

Here is the coin door now after 4 coats of fine textured finish Rust-Oleum flat black spray paint.  I also put in new coin return buttons, locks, and quarter coin mechs.  If you look close you will see that someone added a button to the right of the coin returns for free play.  I want to have a separate coin up for player one and player two.  I think that I am going to use the coin rejects hack for this.  So now what to do with this extra button.  I was thinking of using it to power on the computer since it is there anyway but I'm not sure if people might accidentally hit it during game play.   :dunno

Emphatic has a good idea there. Just yesterday I experimented with potentiometers to make volume controls for my cab. Worked out great!

That sir is an incredibly good idea!  I really wanted a volume nob that was accessible but not on the control panel.  I will look into making this happen!

This site was very helpful in wiring my custom potentiometer is that is the route you are going to go:

« Reply #10 on: July 28, 2011, 09:42:25 pm »

I made a little progress on the new coin door volume knob plan.  I had an old receiver that was collecting dust.  It doesn't have hdmi or the newer blu-ray sound specs and so it was replaced last year.  I really think it is overkill for my arcade car speakers but it's free and I still have so many things to buy.  After taking it apart it looks like it will work well!

The A, B, & Com are labeled and my plan is to unsolder  A, B, & Com as well as the two circled spots.  I believe that the circled solder points are just to keep the potentiometer on the board.  So I will then solder wires in A, B, & Com.  I will connect the pot to the coin door (it already has a threaded part and a nut) I think that a larger washer will be necessary as the hole in the coin door is probably bigger.  Then solder wires on to the pot posts.  Some quick disconnects on each end and I should be all set!  The volume knob is massive so I will be on the lookout for a smaller one but the smaller input select knob will work for now.

Thanks again for the great idea!

The cabinet gets to see the sunlight.

After three coats of paint and all of the dirty work out of the way, I'm ready to have the cabinet inside.  I rented an appliance mover from U-haul.   It was only $10 and well worth it.  I have also purchased a new mirror and front glass.  Now the installation of everything begins.

Really excited to see where you take this project.  I am in the midst of planning a mirror cab that is a bit of a hybrid between Terminator 2 and a few other cabs, so it's nice to see someone else actively working on a mirror cabinet.  Good luck!

Oh btw when you are are replacing your mirror, not positive but I think T2 used a "half-silvered" mirror, not just a standard mirror you would get at the store.  It allows light through one-way to show a damage effect behind the mirror when the player gets shot.  Supposedly you can pick them up at a glass shop, but I'm just going off of info that I've read online.  Of course you might not even be interested in that effect, but I figured it couldn't hurt to tell you.

My wife and I took a good look at that mirror trying to figure out how it was different from a regular mirror.  The damage effect isn't something that we wanted to keep but the mirror has a tint to it.  I would guess that it achieves the same effect as smoked plexiglass. I wrestled around with the idea of what tint do get.  I ordered it from this site https://www.miror.com/mirrors.asp for $38.  In the end all of their tints seemed dark so I decided to play it safe and just go for the clear mirror.  If it doesn't work out well, I read about another idea.  Someone took their front glass and put a light car window tint on it.  I'll let you know how it works out and I'll post pictures.   :)

Re: Terminator 2 Cabinet to ??? Project - [Bad Day]
« Reply #15 on: August 04, 2011, 08:22:46 am »

Yesterday did not go well. I started out by removing the guts of a computer from a huge case that would not fit in the cab to a much more manageable case.  After spending a few hours being careful to hook everything back up, I moved it into the case.  I turned it on and I could tell that it booted up but no image on the tv.  So after checking wires and turning it off and resetting ram, still the same thing.  I ran and got a monitor and it was just blank.  So I rebooted and then windows started to boot up but then just blank.  I rechecked all of the wires and went to reboot but nothing would happen.  It was then that I noticed that the jumper for the power button had fallen out.  I must have snagged the cord running up my cab while I was looking around.  I don't have the wires cleaned up yet.  So it was really hard to see the little jumper pins in my dark cab but I thought I had the right ones and *SNAP*.   Yup, wrong jumper pins and I fried the motherboard.  I tried letting is sit for a good while unplugged hoping that the power supply would reset or something but of course it's just dead.

So still angry over my carelessness I wanted to know if there was something wrong with the tv.  I'm using a 27" component in flat tube.  I had to create a frame for it by hand out of 1/4" aluminum bar.  The thing weighs a ton and only just fits in the space that once held a 25" arcade monitor.  Our blu-ray player has component out so I tried that.  Static but no picture.  So I tried the Wii component out.  This time I got a picture but it was just black and white and showed the same image doubled on each side.  So thinking that I was SOL, I tried an old laptop that had a dongle for s-video.  The dongle had the same plug type as the component dongle that I am going to use so I tried that.  The res was 800x600 and I got a black and white picture but it did not have static and it was not doubled.  I rebooted the computer and this time the blue kicked in.  Thinking that I was probably still SOL I tried that laptop on our HDTV and it looked the same there!  That gives me hope that this will work once I get a computer up and running.  After uncasing the tv, building a custom frame, reversing the horizontal picture, and cramming the thing in the cab... I can't imagine doing it all over again.

So I took a break and did what I had to do.  I ordered a new motherboard.  The one that I was using was four years old and of course they don't sell it anymore.  The motherboard needs DDR3 ram so my old DDR2 is of no use and I decided to go with an i3 2100 sandy bridge processor.  Should be really fast for an arcade.  Just more money that I really didn't want to spend.

During all of this, my new controls arrived in the mail.  This was a nice surprise.  So last night I traced out my control panel.  Well after laying everything out I was in for a shock.  The old T2's nice and large control panel was hiding a dirty little secret.  While the top of the cp is nice and large the actual room inside is not.  After careful measurement the sad truth was that it didn't look like I would have room for the trackball and the street fighter 2 layout that I wanted.  The picture (modified in paint) shows the border of the cp in black and the red lines show the area where controls can go to sit inside of the cabinet.  After I laid everything many different ways it was confirmed that unless I wanted the trackball against the monitor glass or the joystick against the monitor glass, it just wasn't going to fit.  I could skip the trackball but it's something that I've always wanted and I have already paid for it.  I can place the joystick and buttons about halfway up the cp and the trackball at the bottom.  This will fit but only if I place the joysticks and buttons as close as possible to each other.   I'm not sure how that will feel to play.  But this would leave a nice path clear in front of the trackball.  UG what a day   :banghead:

Terminator 2 Cabinet to ??? Project - [Let There Be Light]
« Reply #16 on: August 04, 2011, 10:08:40 pm »

I had a nice surprise today.  When I got home I had a package from GroovyGameGear.com.  Late Monday afternoon I ordered the NovaMatrix LINX LED Marquee Lights from them.  Now just three days later I have them. That is some really fast turnaround time!  Thanks GGG.  I went with nine instead of the standard six.  I made quick work of mounting them.  I tested it with a power supply going to 12V and I really like them.  I think they will work well and I love that they should last practically forever and they put out very little heat.

If the mirror you bought has the coating on the rear side (typical mirror), then you might find that there is a ghost image when you use it for gaming.  Typical mirrors distort a little when light goes thru the glass surface to get to the reflected coating.

The mirror games in arcade machines put the coating on the front of the glass, which allows distortion-free reflection.

As thatpurplestuff said it definitely has a half silver "one way mirror" type coating to allow for the hit light to shine through.  What Xiaou2 said also makes sense.  It would explain the rust type marks that I see on the front of the mirror.  I could see the glass having a slight reflection and making a ghosting effect with the mirror.  I will let you know how it looks once I get the new mirror.

I think you mis-read me Yohan.

The T2 mirror has a half silvered mirror, which should have the mirror coating on the front of the glass, which will NOT produce ghosting.

A Normal mirror will have the coating on the back of the mirror, and it WILL produce ghosting.

You can buy half silvered or special optical mirrors with the coating on the front, but it may cost more than a typical mirror.

The coating on typical mirrors is on the rear, to protect it from scratches.  Front side mirrors are used in specialty situations, such as telescopes, where optical clarity and accuracy is needed.

Any problems you are seeing from your current T2 mirror, is due to the coating being damaged or missing, and also because of any light that is leaking into the back of the cabinet.

I think you mis-read me Yohan.

Hi Xiaou2,

I understood you I just jumped mirrors mid paragraph and wasn't very clear, I think I was still thinking it out while typing.  doh.

"It would explain the rust type marks that I see on the front of the mirror."  Here I'm speaking of my current T2 mirror.

"I could see the glass having a slight reflection and making a ghosting effect with the mirror."  Here I am talking about the mirror that I ordered.  When I say, "I could see the glass having..." I really mean,  "I can imagine the the glass having..."  poor choice of words.

I can see that I was about as clear as mud.

I have been sticking my laptop up to our bathroom mirror and full length mirror at a 45 degree angle and it seems ok.  It's an lcd vs crt though and I think the glass is thinner, so I will just have to wait for the new mirror to arrive.  I still need to get you that pic of the T2 mirror as well.  I didn't grab it while I had it out but I will have it out again in a week or two.  Not a lot to take a picture of though really.  On the back it's all white and in two places the white is thinner and if you look close you can make out a pattern like a star burst. It also has the words TOP and BOTTOM printed in red.

I emailed miror.com asking them about this ghosting problem and they confirmed that it would be an issue.  They were kind enough to cancel this portion of my order as they no longer have the ability to obtain a 1st surface mirror.  I also ordered tempered glass from them and I look forward to letting you know how that goes.  So far https://www.miror.com has been great to work with!

I made a little progress yesterday.  I wired up the marquee lights and stuck in the old T2 marquee for now.

I also wired up the coin door lights.  Having received a new soldering iron and solder I put the coin door volume control into action.  I unsoldered the pot from the receiver control board and soldered new wires into it.  I then attached the pot to the coin door and attached the three wires to it.  I used the smaller input selector knob for now and I think it looks alright but I have a smaller one ordered.  I put the receiver to the radio selection and tested it out.  It works great!  It's awesome when a plan comes together!

The t-molding is in and I have wired up the control panel to the IPAC-2.  The wiring process went smoothly except when I was done player 2 button 3 would not work.  After much troubleshooting it seems that the IPAC connection for that button doesn't work.  No idea why but it isn't a problem as I just wired it up to Player 2 button 7 and reconfigured mame.  I have the tv component in adjusted as good as it's going to get.  It was a fussy process and even though it isn't perfect (small keystoning and not completely straight edges), it's not really noticeably once you launch a game.

I still have some cabinet wiring to do, a new marque to install, some front glass is in the mail, and I still need to find a new mirror.  I have some feelers out for the 1st surface mirror but no returned calls yet.

The big mistake that I made is that I started playing it.  It will be hard to keep working when I can play instead!   >:D

I also let me five year old daughter kick my butt at Street Fighter II.  So was so happy that she asked if we could play again before breakfast!   :)

From what I see, it looks real nice. How about some more pics. I assume the control panel might be a little higher than most cabinets, I like that because I sometimes get a little lower back pain from standard hight panels.
great job

What did you use to paint the outside of the cab? Did you paint over the original melamine coating, sand it first? I have a PGA golf cab I'm in the process of converting and I'm not sure how to progress in the paint department yet.
