3 PS3's with red lights errors
« on: July 14, 2011, 03:45:00 pm »
Yeah, I'm going to try and fix these 3 PS3's. They all have the red lights error. The owner told me that. If I fixed them all, he'll give me one as payment. Any advice?

Please bear in mind that I never repaired a PS3.

Do you know if they even start up at all? I would start with the simple solutions and work your way up. See if you can get in and restore the hard drive. I believe there is also a debug menu you can get to by holding down the power button when the machine is off. I never seen it, so I couldn't tell you how it operates, or if it is helpful.

If the soft repair methods are not helpful, I would open it up and check the connections on cables and look for weak soldier points or burnt out areas. Make sure the hard drive is plugged in properly. Since you have 3 systems, you can try swapping the components between them to see if you can isolate an issue.

Learn how to fix PS3s before you agree to repair three of them?

;D I've fixed numerous Xbox 360's with the RROD issue... did a lot of reading and watched a lot of youtube videos explaining how to fix these PS3's and their errors. So yeah, I think I'm ready.

Please bear in mind that I never repaired a PS3.

Did all of the soft methods... none of them worked. The owner called me and told me he was goin to buy a heat gun to try and fix em with the heat gun method. Fingers crossed.

How were you fixing Xbox 360s if you didn't have a heat gun?

Those look like the old models when the ps3 was released. If it is, the most common problem was the laser drive going out because they were dual laser drives.

Do you know which models these are?
I need a house to put stuff in, instead of an apartment with stacks of boxes.

I'm curious...what's the payment plan if you only fix 1 or 2 of them?

I've got 2 original PS3s that both went RLOD. Each time I fix them they last for a couple of months before displaying the RLOD again. One of them survived four repairs before dying completely. Not sure it was worth the hassle.  :)

Really? I'll have to check that out.

Cash. About 60$ or 80$.

@funnel: Heat gun and thermal compound on the two RSX chips. That worked fine for three times on each PS3, however the fourth time on one of them was not able to fix it and I had to replace the unit with a new slim PS3.

I'm actually getting quite adept at the process, and can have it done in about an hour, including allowing the chips to cool down for 20 minutes. Like I said though, it only works for about two months at best each time and it looks like I'll probably have to replace the second unit as well, so I'm not sure it's worth it overall. Perhaps others have had better luck though?

Two months!?  Mine only lasted a week the first time and about 10 minutes the second time.  I have since bought a new slim model...
