Good to hear. Just now started playing the original Legions on Namco Museum Virtual Arcade for 360. Far different than Galaga, but still fun in its own way.
Completed projects: Pac bartop (Plug & Play), 30th Anniversary Pac cab (MAME), Point Blank (PS1), Centipede (arcade hardware- light restore), VS. Super Mario Bros (arcade hardware- light restore) Tetris Cocktail (SNES), Arcade Classics upright (60-in-1, then MAME), Multi-Raiden (arcade hardware). Pac Man vs.(Gamecube),

Working on: Pinball Re-theme, Homebrew arcade arena shooter

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

I just couldn't get into the Legions game. Maybe if they'd left the word "Galaga" out of the title, I'd look at it different.

Ditto.  I started it up... "hey this isn't Galaga!" and then I turned it off.

Same here.  Looked like an interesting game, but Galaga it ain't.

I can't say I did, but they really retained a lot of what made Pac-Man what it is.  I think I would have rather seen a new Galaga game stick with the attack waves over multiple scrolling alien landscapes, some bosses, ground targets, the ability to angle the ship, etc, but still fighting waves which need to be destroyed before moving on.  This looks like they wanted to see how many glowing pixels they could fit in the screen at the same time.  Still a fun game, but not really deserving of the name, IMHO.

I bought it and played for about 30 minutes.  There is a mode to switch the graphics on the ship and enemies to the original style.

I think the most un-authentic aspect is that its a horizontal game now.  I haven't looked for it, but if there is an option to change that, I'd like to know.

A hacked Super Mario Bros with Link in it does not suddenly become a Zelda game.

No. I would've preferred the game we were supposed to get. It has always been my least favorite and I was glad when Super Mario Brothers 3 came along and straightened the series back out.

Actually..........  Doki Doki Panic was directed by Miyamoto while the Japanese SMB 2 was not.  Mario was included in Doki Doki panic as a character as well as many smb elements (pow! blocks, stars, ect).  Miyamoto was not a  fan of the art direction nor the overall game design of SMB2 (He said the sprites looked too detailed and there weren't enough added gameplay elements over SMB.  Observations that are correct btw) but liked doki doki enough that when the decision was made not to release smb2j in america, he lead the team to convert doki doki into smb 2 himself.

So despite what people might think, the american smb2 is really more of the "real" smb2 than the official one is.

What he said.  Pac-man is about gaining points, memorizing ghost behavior, eating dots and munching ghosts.  All of that was retained in pm ce with the only real difference being constantly morphing mazes.  They even pulled the original programmer out of retirement and had him code the game.  He even used the original code for ghost movement and pacman movement.  So pac-man CE is very much a pacman game.  Now pacman CE 2 arguably might be going to far, but it still retains a lot of what pacman is.

The galaga legions series (which is fairly old btw, I think it started on the psx) tries to take the galaga/galaxian name and tack it on to a rather mediocre Gradius/Star Fox hybrid.  It has virtually nothing to do with galaga.
