Green Lantern
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:30:28 pm »
Anyone see it yet? I saw it the other day, and granted there were some REALLY cheesy parts, I thought it was enjoyable. I hate how movies keep trying to push some sort of romance to broaden the demographic. Im not a GL fanboy at all, so maybe the fanboys didnt like it, but I wouldnt have known because I just know the basics of the GL mythos. Critics are giving it abysmal reviews, saying its only saving grace is the effects, which were great. I personally enjoy Ryan Renolyds(sp), so that was neat too, seeing him as a super hero.

And Blake Lively looked AMAZING. Saw it with the GF so I couldnt gawk too hard.  ;D
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Agree across the board.  I saw it at a dine-in theater, which I'm liking cause you can pre-order and select your seat before hand.  But on topic, movie was decent, bit silly in parts but enjoyable.

I am a comic fan, but don't follow Green Lantern, so only had a general knowledge of the character.  I thought some of the effects were good, some not so, but this was the first film I've seen in a while that was 3D, so that may have had something to do with it.

My wife liked it as much as Thor, I thought Thor was bit better but this was decent.  Kinda of part with Fantastic 4?

Spoilers below...
.
.
.
.
.
Some things that I wasn't crazy about was that I thought they should have spent more time on the GL planet, he got like NO training and then was awesome, which I understand, but would have been good to see much more GL interaction.  Also, I was surprised to see who the main GL guy was, as I've always known him as a villain.  But if you stayed until after the credits, you'll see setup for next film.  I also don't like that EVERY comic hero needs to have a girl that he is going after at the same time he's learning his powers, but that's Hollywood, and she WAS smokin'.

I am a GL fanboy and I liked it a lot.  Not perfect but I'll buy the DVD when it comes out.  My wife liked it better than Super 8 for what that is worth.

I can't defend it to non GL fans though.  People I talked to at work didn't understand parts of it including the bit after the credits (which I thought was awesome).

I always thought it was kind of a boring comic book because they could do ANYTHING with the rings.

That being said, Iron Man 2 permanently turned me off the comic book movies.  I'm happy every time one of them bombs at the theater because it reduces the odds of more of them.  So far Thor, X-men, and Green Lantern have made me very happy this summer.

Again, Thor would have been better without the stupid romance arc, or even natalie portmans character. Iron man 2 sucked royally. I was stoked too about war machine, and they just made the character out to be a joke. Even Iron Man/Tony Stark was a joke. I hated that movie. Xmen first class was lame too, the only cool part was when Magneto was in the bar.

How do you not understand parts of it?! Yeah, I knew enough about the comics to know the part after the credits was coming.

Doesnt Hal get possessed by Parallax and becomes a villian in the comics?

Me too.  The people I'm talking about have no idea who GL is.

Although I've got two kids who watched every episode of the new Justice League with me TWICE and they didn't remember Sinestro was a villain.  Just sad.   ;D

I'm thinking I might like this flick more than the average Superhero flick coming out lately since I don't know a hell of a lot about GL other than the basics.

I have been seriously disenchanted with superhero flicks right now and the announcements that they are rebooting rebutchering a number of them has got me cranky. I normally enjoy the whole genre.

I generally hate romance in Superhero flicks as well, they are usually half-baked filler. There are of course exceptions like Superman where the it is actually pretty important to the plot of the film.

Done well in Superman.
Done poorly in Superman Returns.

I thought X-men: First Class was the second best X-men movie, just behind X2.

I agree with you about Superman Returns.

But this has to be one of the most painful romantic scenes in any movie.

Come on, that was a classic scene. The move was from the 70's, so it might feel a bit cheesy, but I think it is pretty darn memorable. In context, it is a time in the movie where no one knew who or what superman was. It makes more sense why she was thinking dumb questions like "Can you read my mind"

I see your point and it is a classic scene -- the visuals anyway.  But I hated that scene back then.  Maybe not when I saw it in the theater but certainly when it replayed on HBO when I was a kid.  Just utterly painful dialog from Margo.

I know what you mean, it is really odd dialog for Margo's Lois. I'm kinda more of a fan of how she plays off of superman in the second movie better anyway. I really liked the whole Niagara Falls bit when she figured out superman's Identity. Spoiler:Superman is Clark Kent. Shhhh!

Agreed. I liked Superman Returns, but I didnt like the somber tone of the movie. People complain about the action scenes, but for me it was the overall tone that detracted from the movie. That and the costume. I hated the boots, and the cape. Batman has a leathery cape, Supermans cape should be designed to be like a flag, vibrant, and flowy. I also didnt like how they took away the truth, justice, and the american way thing, trying to appeal to a broader audience, people forget, Superman is an American hero, designed by Americans. Why try to hide that? Its stupid. Im sketch about Zakk Snyders Superman... Im not really looking forward to it.

I thought X-men: First Class was the second best X-men movie, just behind X2.

I have to disagree with you there, X2, then Xmen, then First class. I dont like how they ripped off other mutants, and made the originals RETARDED. Beast was the biggest disappointment, the dragonfly chick was stupid, Havoks hoola hoop ass was the most bizarre thing ever. Havok is Cyclop's brother, why not put him in it? The best part in the movie IMO was when Magneto was in the bar. Magneto was the best part in the whole movie, but that was expected, because this was supposed to be an origin tale of Magneto, a la Wolverine, but they scrapped it and did First Class... ::)
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Comics in the 80s were more 'adult' than all these 'remakes'. And yet, the whole superhero idea is pretty ridiculous. I think Kick-Ass showed some truth in this regard.

Too bad kick ass was unwatchable crap.
Disagree!!

Silly in some spots and a brutal/potentially hard to watch in others, yes, but not a crap film.

Most watchable Nicholas Cage role in years, IMO.

But not crap! :P

I watched it the other night, and i liked it...it wasnt the best , but it been better than some of the other comic movies...
There were some cheesy parts, but i overlooked it...

Mike... Im not top notch on the GL history... But yeah Hal Jordon was possessed by Paralax/became a villian, almost destroyed the corp... then he got killed, there were 3 other human GL later down the line and then somehow he came back...

To answer the other question of Sinestro...yeah he was a yellow villian, and they redid his orgin to where he was a GL to start, then turned to the "yellow"side...(I bet George Lucas had something to do with this)  :laugh2:

What blows my mind is that DC recently did a storyline called Blackest Night...come to find out there is a ring for every color of the rainbow...and Black raises the dead, yada yada yada...they even killed off Batman and brought him back as a zombie....WAY OVER MY HEAD to comprehend...

Im a Ryan Renolds fan myself and it was fun to see him play GL....and yes that chick was hot....but in all i thought they tried to squeeze too much in the movie...everything was just "fast"...

thats my 2 cents...

I know nothing about most of the '2nd tier' super heroes (ie: those that aren't superman, batman, spiderman) so I suspect I'll enjoy this to some degree...

Which is why I enjoyed x-men: first class more than many here. That was a 4/5 for me

Quote
my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - The Way Back, The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

4/5 - True Grit, Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

They may exist, but you would be hard pressed to find one that holds stable flight 500 feet in the air, carrying two fully loaded gatling guns with control servos attached that were just welded on by an ex-cop, all while being piloted by a teenager without a drivers license and zero hours flight time - who only just read the owners manual less than an hour ago. ;D
