Picture starts to "vibrate" after about an hour
« on: June 19, 2011, 06:05:48 pm »
Hey guys,
I've got a 13'' DK machine that l'm having a little trouble with the monitor on.
After about an hour or so of being on the picture starts to "vibrate".

I shot a quick youtube video of it:

Can anyone tell me if this would be fixed by recapping, or do you think it's something else?

Thanks for any help!

Unplug the degauss coil and see if that fixes anything.  It may also help to reseat all connectors.  Otherwise, issues like this are often related to caps gone bad.

Cool thanks bro.
What does the degauss coil look like?
It's a Sanyo EZ 13''...

The degauss coil is the black coil (looks like a thick tube wrapped continuously with black tape) surrounding the back of the tube itself.  There will be a fairly heavy set of 2 wires running from that back to the main board of the monitor.  Go ahead and unplug it.  It's not always black, but it usually is.

(Note: this is NOT the bare metal braid that's strapped to the back of the tube face, which will also have heavy wires running from it but to the NECK board. Leave that plugged in!)

I'd bet on either cracked solder or aged caps causing this. I don't think its related to the degaussing coil. That would distort the color as well as geometry.

I'd look for bulging caps or ones that are leaking.  If they are doing either or......they might not be out of spec yet......but probably will be soon.

Hello all,

Thank you so much for your help and suggestions.
Yesterday l found a fellow arcade guy local to work on the monitor with me.
We replaced the caps, and also replaced the pots on the monitor. After about 12 hours of being on it's yet to do the "vibrating" as shown in the photo above. The repair guy that worked on it with me said he didn't think it was the caps, but the pots that was causing the issue.

Its best that it was recapped tho. Now you likely won't need to worry about it for at least 10 years as long as its not running 24-7.
