The asteroid report was released so the thousands of professional and amateur star watchers could help out validate the crash. After the report was released, those extra helpers have checked it out, and the new observations have dropped the chances astronomically (

) to pretty much zero. In a couple days, I bet it will be reported as zero.
Of course, that news not as "good material" for the media to hype, so you won't hear as much about it.

Of course, rumor mills are a lot like the media (and vice versa) so newsgroups, forums, etc probably won't spend it either.
