Safely disposing of a 19inch CRT monitor, missing case
« on: June 09, 2011, 03:38:55 pm »
Okay, my CRT is getting replaced with a shiney 19inch LCD, my problem is that i decased the monstrosity and obviously threw out the case.

What precautions do i need to make before taking it to a landfill?

if you want you can knock the neck off of it  :lol

are we actually driving to a landfill and disposing it, or just throwing it into a dumpster/garbage can for pickup?

unless you are doing it yourself i wouldn't want to leave it as is. if it's potentially going to be handled by someone else, discharge the tube and place it into a box and mark it glass. i would drop the box or knock the neck off to break the glass in a controlled manner so there is no surprise later on... if your driving it to a landfill and tossing it into a pile/giant dumpster... just toss it.

if they have electronics recycling there, just place it with that stuff. problem solved.

CRTs contain lead and other hazardous chemicals (e.g. the phosphors) and should be disposed of at a hazardous waste or e-waste facility.  Fees are sometimes $10 but sometimes free.

You should tap the neck gently with a small hammer to crack it and release the vacuum in a controlled and reasonably safe manner.  Wear safety goggles or glasses with side shields while doing this.  A proper disposal facility won't care, but a conventional landfill or garbage hauler will greatly appreciate it.

I don't know where you live, but the county I live in, its actually a misdemeanor if they catch you throwing away Tvs/Monitors in the trash,  we can take it to the landfill at no charge.  Check with your sanitation/Landfill and see.

Give it away. There are poor souls on Craigslist who'll take it.

i would, but it has discoloration on both bottom corners, nothing major but bleh, its not perfect.

Though if anyone wants it and stays in the central belt of scotland they can have it, i'll even throw in the wooden surround for it, images are in the link below
