NEOGEO mame BIOS
« on: June 02, 2011, 07:55:34 am »
I've searched and failed.

so i emplor you to help as its driving me nuts.

i have Mame 0.138, i have the Download of the NEOGEO BIOS in .zip format. i've copied it into every folder i can that has anything to do with my mame setup, i have extracted it as well. but i still cant get any of the NEOGEO games to work.

where does the BIOS need to go, Zipped or unzipped.

anyone know of a game and version that does work with the NEOGO BIOS so i can test please.

love you

What version of the ROMS do you have?  They need to match the version of Mame that you are running (.138).

Keep all the files zipped too.  Put the bios file and all other roms in the rom folder.

I had to search around for the bios as well so I could play metal slug, but I did find one that works. I understand your frustration with how many different versions of each game there are out there, and then needing the right version bios to run said game. If anyone knows of a site that you can verify such information, that would be great. For example, I want to play NBA Jam, guess what? I don't have the parent rom, I don't get to play, most people would give up at this point.

Use Google to find a site that allows you to download an entire rom set.  It'll have parents, bios, etc that you need for all games.  You also want to use a site that tells you what version of the roms that they have.  Matching the roms to Mame is the key.

I find it funny that you tell me to "use Google" to search for a site. You think i'm gonna use bing or some other crap? :lol Just implying that someone searches for something should invoke Google automatically. Anyways, i'm not looking for a site to download roms, just kind of a verification, like say I want NBA Jam. It will list the parent rom and all clones underneath it. Usually I'll just go into the MAME.ini for hyperspin and search for a game I want, and it will usually say "clone of blahblahblah", and that helps too.

first off i want to rule out my own stupidity.

i have a Mame folder called Mame, in that are various folders relating to Mame and my front end mgalaxy.

i have a couple of roms that work fine (1945 etc) on my version of mame 0.138

i have some games (Metal Slug etc) that wil lnot work and require (i beleive) the NEOGEO BIOS.

i have a ZIP file called NEOGEO BIOS.zip. where do i put this? in the mame parent directory, in the roms folder, or somewhere else?

do i leave the NEOGEO BIOS.zip folder compressed like i do with my roms?

how do i know/check the compatibilty of the game ROM to my version of MAME?

how do i know/check the compatibilty of the BIOS to my version of MAME?

how do i know/check the compatibilty of the BIOS to my version of of the game?

sorry for these questions, i spent ages searching last night for the answers but came up with nothing really. i was probably not searching for the correct terms.

Its about impossible to know which version of the roms that you have.  You can use a program called Clrmamepro to have them match with any version of Mame, but you need another set of roms to do that with usually.  For now, it's not something that'll be easy for you to do.

Your Mame folder should have a "roms" directory in it.  Put all your roms in that folder and leave them zipped.

There isn't always a big change between Mame versions for most roms so it's fairly common for most roms to work between different versions like .138 and .140.  However, not all will work.  There are times though when there is a big change between versions which affects a lot of roms.

Your best bet is to figure out where you got your roms and see what version they are.  If you know that, you can easily get the Mame version to match the roms.  If you can't figure that out, you need to find a site that shows you what version of the roms that they have.  Google it and you'll find a variety of places.  Again, make sure you know what version they are!  That's the key.   :)

Just a quick note, it should be named neogeo.zip, not neogeo bios.zip, that may cause some issues.

I missed this post earlier.  WTF is bing?   ;D

You can use MAWS to find out what other files a particular rom (game) needs to run.

I checked that site, and I do have the parent rom, so my rom must be missing files then... Luckily that site also tells me what files it should have! Thanks again!
