Ebay Stupidity (humor?)
« on: May 31, 2011, 05:01:38 pm »
I'm sure everyone has some stories especially if you sell a lot.  Here is my most recent experience with stupidity:

I sold a Craftsman 19.2 V Reciprocating Saw, auction ended May-26-11 18:55:17 PDT, auction stated shipping was $14 and would ship within 2 days of payment.

Payment made immediately: May 26, 2011 18:58:18 PDT

1st message received May 27, 2011 at 7:28 PM subject:Where is my item?

"Why didnt my item ship today?"

I responded with:
"As listed under shipping: "Will usually ship within 2 business days of receiving cleared payment". I work full time and don't have time to go to the post office everyday for items that do not fit into my mailbox. I was planning to drop it off at the post office tomorrow but would be more than happy to refund your payment if you are unhappy that it was not shipped today."

Buyer responded: "Just ship my order"

Shipped it first thing on Saturday May 28th, really felt like cancelling order as I figured the buyer was going to be a d-bag but figured since I received my first negative feedback after 11 years a few months ago I don't really care if someone negs me now.

Package was delived today May 31st and:

Recieved this messageTue, May 31, 2011 at 2:38 PM:

Subject: Request to Change an order.
"$14 is an over charge for shipping on a medium flat rate box isnt it? Thats MFB is less than $11, and I paid a fair price for the saw."

My Response:
"The price for shipping was listed prior to you bidding, the shipping fee is perfectly reasonable for shipping a saw and I would suspect you thought as much when you made your bid. Have a great day."

Buyer:
"I sell a ton of stuff on E Bay, I only mentioned this because most sellers send their items the day they are paid for, and usually only ad .50 cents to $1.00 for handling."

I couldn't believe that the shipping date was even brought up since it was delivered today so I responded:
"You received it today. The post office was closed on Monday due to the holliday. When do you think you would have recieved it had I shipped it on Friday.... Yup you guessed it, today! In the auction it stated that it would be shipped within 2 days and it listed the shipping price. You obviously did not read or comprehend that, you also feel the need to complain about when I shipped it even though you are recieving it the same time as you would have if I shipped it out immediately. Please tell me you are trolling me, if not I don't know what to tell you."

Maybe some enlightenment form the buyer, I doubt it:
Buyer: "Wow, dont respond to this e mail, thanks and have a great day!"

Waiting on negative feedback but I would suspect that they will wait a few weeks  so they can complain about shipping time.  And not suprising it's an AOL email

Unrelated, the people that are the worst are the people that try and give you unsolicited advice, usually I just delete it but one day I was in a mood and responded, see attached:

Raleigh, you just hit upon why I stopped selling on eBay (along with the fees).  Don't get me wrong, most people are fine to deal with - but it's the occasional jerk that makes you wish you never bothered.  I had one guy freak out because of a stray mark on a CD inner-sleeve.  I understand some people are anal about such things (especially collectors), but it sold for so little (and it was not an out-of-print CD), why even bother?

At least you got your money.  If he leaves you negative, just leave a response to his complaint.   I think most buyers know there are people you just can't satisfy and a couple of negatives/neutrals on a seller's record are acceptable.

Good stuff.  Brings back memories of my ill-received negative from some idiot in Europe for a Game and Watch.

Nowadays with feedback revisions I don't even bother trying to sort it out first.  Zap the seller with a neg and wait for them to beg you to revise it after they refund.

What's you ebay username so I can block you from bidding on my stuff?   :P   Because not all sellers are dishonest and the fact that you'd hit them with a negative first and ask questions later is unnerving.  Yes, you can revise now but it's still a hassle and you're limited by the number of times you can do it depending on volume.

I'm by no means a "power seller" but I had a couple of transactions that had problems I was able to solve rather quickly without bad feedback being left and all parties satisfied.

Here is a message I got over the weekend, background, sold a workout chair for $55 plus $25 shipping (40lb large item), so total paid was $80.  Buyer used buy it now and paid immediately.

They received the item and was happy becuase they left possitive feedback on Friday, the day they recieved it but then sent this message:

"Hi,
I paid for this over PayPal, and just discovered today that you took $120.00 off of my Credit Card without my permission. I would appreciate my refund right away.
Thanks.
- rknblasi"

It gave me a chuckle at the the thought of me being able to access her credit card and get money, I am guessing that since I left the price sticker on it from the store which was $120 she got confused, or she was just trying to scam me.  I explained to her that I only recieved the $80 that she send via paypal and she should log onto her paypal account to see her transactions.  Today I logged on and seen that she is no longer a registered member so I guess I won't hear back from her, account was created in March and she had 3 negatives totaling over $1,500 where people claimed she was a thief.

Fence it on e-bay or at the flea market, I guess, but seemed like a great deal of hassle for a small amount of money.

Usually, no matter how ridiculous a buyer gets on an ebay transaction...I just smile and comply, for fear of negative feedback.

This method worked and we had 100% positive feedback for over a decade with many transactions, until one day a Frenchman decided to neg me for sending 45m kite lines, when he had paid for 40m lines, but thats why we love the French so much, right?

If I get an unsatisfied buyer, I always tell them to ship it back for a full refund.  I'll take the hit in shipping and they will too if they want to send it back, I provide a lot of pictures and give full details so there shouldn't be any suprises when they get it.  I wont negotiate after the fact, it's all or nothing.

I'm a power seller and a top rated seller so when that happens every couple years it's not a big deal.

99% of what I sell are inherited items so they don't cost me anything but my time.  I've sold all the $xxx and $x,xxx items now and I am just left with some boxes of small dollar items so I'm at the point to be done with ebay, have a yard sale and enjoy life without hearing laughable complaints.

Part of the fun of selling things online is dealing with the general retardation of the public.

I posted a DVD Player in the free section of Craigslist, some lady came and picked it up. 4 hours later she is knocking at my door. I answer and she says "I need the remote. You didn't give me the remote." I said "Go buy a universal one" she said "I did and I still cannot get the 5.1 speakers working without the remote that came with it." I told her I didn't know where the remote was.

2 weeks later, there's a knock at the door. Same lady. "Did you find the remote yet? I really need it." so I told her "Look. the DVD Player was free. You can give it back if you want. Or you can hop on ebay and look for the proper remote." She says "I already spent money on a universal remote and now I have to pay for another remote?" I finally had to tell her. "Deal with it. The item was free. It is no longer my problem."

Ridiculous.

Dear GOD I wish you were kidding, but I know youre not. Thats terrible! Thats why I always do my CL stuff at a public place. I ditch em then leave. I have however had a few people come to my house, but nothing like that has ever happened. My mind is blown all over my window after reading that. Hilarious!  :lol

:) I have a ton of CL stories. You meet up with some strange people.

I once bought a Mac off of CL and when I showed up at their house to pick it up, the guy wouldn't let me go. He kept talking and talking, all the while his wife was in the kitchen cooking. I finally tell the guy I have to leave and his wife comes in the front room and says "Would you like to stay for dinner? We are having fish." to which the husband says "Yes. Please stay for dinner." I said "uhhh no I am good. I have to go." It was very kind of them to offer....but still strange to me.

And another time I was trying to sell a minivan on CL. The van ran fine. It just had a few cosmetic defects, like the drivers door didn't open from the outside and the electric window didn't roll up on the drivers side. Also the turn signal stick was broke off. All were easily fixable. I was selling the van for $300. Perfectly reasonable for a running van. I just wanted it out of my driveway and didn't care if I took a loss on it. This guy shows up to look at it. All the while he is nitpicking all of the defects which were already described in the ad. He keeps trying to talk me down by pointing each one out. I told him "$300 for a running vehicle is a steal already, defects or not. You can part it out for triple that." The guy keeps making it a point to tell me that he knows nothing about cars. He keeps saying stuff like "If there's problems, i wont know how to fix it. I don't know anything about cars at all" The guy then asks "Mind if I start it up?". So I let him. Car is running for a good 10 mins while he is poking around looking at it. Checking the oil etc. He then asks to see the title. It is in the house. I go in the house to get it. When I come out the engine is bellowing smoke that smells like burning oil, and the guy says "Look at this engine. Major major problems. I will give you $100 for it cash money. I am a master mechanic and let me tell you. This is a major problem." I said "I thought you didn't know anything about cars." he said "I lied." I suspiciously look at the engine and notice that there is motor oil poured all over the engine. I told the guy to go ---fudgesicle--- himself. While I was in the house he poured motor oil on my hot engine to make it look as if the van had a major problem. I mean the guy was already getting great deal. $300 for a running vehicle?

Yeah, I learned the hard way, don't leave CL people alone when they are on your property.  I'm not sure why that guy would tell you right out that he lied to you and expect anything other than an invitation to GTFO.

I freecycle a lot of things but I'll just leave them on my porch at the end of the driveway.  The person picks it up at some point in the next couple of days and I don't have to meet them.  Only issue I've ever had with that, aside from the obvious "never showed up", is people tromping my wife's flowers.  Or I guess the woman who showed up in a Taurus completely full of junk to get a microwave cart and wanted me to strap it to her roof for her.

Yes. This. Freecycle, Good. Freecycle with dealing with others, bad.

I also get a kick out of reading the wanted section of freecycle. "Wanted: Free plasma, LCD or LED TV. Must be above 32" and in excellent condition."  ::)

Why the hell would you even let a stranger onto your property for something so worthless?  A free DVD player?  Did your county stop trash collections???

I don't like throwing stuff away if it can be used by others. If I have stuff I want to get rid of, whether it is worthless or not, I will usually post it on CL for free. If no one takes it from there I will toss it.

Let me elaborate. When I say "worthless" I don't mean completely worthless. I mean worthless to me because it is outdated tech or something I don't need that doesn't have a market value. Like working dvd players, dvds, tapes, vcrs, crt monitors, old ram. I don't like throwing stuff like this away. But I am NOT one of those people that post "Free broken concrete" or "Free bag of sticks"...I won't even post broken things on CL.

I mean if it is trash, it goes in the trash. But if it works, I feel guilty throwing it in the trash because there is always someone who could use it.

That's what women shelter collection bins are for, my friend.

The women's shelter here is a little more particular on what they want. Clothes, hygiene products, baby stuff, and Disney DVD/Blu Ray combo packs.

The nice thing with goodwill is they hand you a "name your own price" donation receipt for tax deduction purposes.

Here it's nearly impossible to get the deduction receipt.  You'll stand there a half hour while they wait for "that guy" to come back from his break.  When he gets back your stuff is already mixed up with all the other stuff and you get written up for a 1978 coffee maker and an end table with two legs.

You don't have to itemize the deductions unless you go over $500.  None of you are donating anything worth getting a receipt for, that whole thing is an IRS farce to encourage good behavior.

It piles up over the course of the year.  The IRS allowances for used clothing are higher than you might think.  If you give them a few garbage bags of clothes a year, which can be done when you have kids outgrowing everything, that can fill most of the $500 in a hurry.  Toss in a cleaning out of the basement and $500 isn't that hard in a year.

Of course, the value of the >$500 deduction isn't much, so it's not worth the hassle unless you go way over.  I usually claim $495 and Freecycle the rest.  ;)

If you're writing off $500 for a bag of used clothes, you're going to get nailed if you ever get audited.  You can only write off fair market value, not what TJ Max said the retail price originally was when you were trolling the clearance bin.  Fair market value on a semen and beer stained couch isn't $650, either.

Not a bag, several bags.  Going by the values given in the ItsDeductible app from Intuit.  Now of course they could be wrong but a full trash bag of clothes in resaleable condition had more value than I thought before I plugged them into that.  Four trash bags full of $3-5 items adds up fast.

I would've told 'em I don't like seafood.  Which for me is the truth.

Ridiculous.

No way. Why would you even bother posting an add, talking with strangers, setting up times for them to come over for free? I really can’t even compute that. Sure I would give something I no longer wanted to friend or family but that’s it.

I suppose. And there is always Good Will....I guess it might be worth it to not have to deal with the stupid people.

I wholey endorse Good Will.  It is a fantastic program and anything you give them helps.  Not only is it a place for people to get items at a low price, but they generally hire and train people that are disabled, or have other social/criminal issues that would normally prevent them from having a job.  We generally donate large bags of clothes/electronics/ect a couple of times a year.  Every Good Will in the nation has a rear drop-off.  Pull your car up, press the buzzer, somebody comes out to take the stuff out for you.  So yeah, it is by far the easiest way to get rid of things you don't want or don't need anymore.

You can get a receipt if you must but in all honesty, if you are using it as a tax deduction you aren't really giving and expecting nothing in return and thus it's not charity and you should be ashamed of yourself.   :P

You are expecting nothing in return from the recipient.  Taking advantage of the gov't incentive is not the same as expecting something from Goodwill.

Hypernova: Nope. Never found the remote. heh

Fallacy: I was home from work for 2 days and I was spending the 2 days staying home all day cleaning the basement and garage, which is why I was posting freebies on CL to begin with. I didn't give my phone number. I just gave an address and told them to knock. When people showed up I asked what they wanted and then handed it to them. It really wasn't inconvenient in any way for me. But then of course it was sort of inconvenient after the fact, when the lady kept showing up asking for the remote.

I mark it up as a lesson learned though guys. I don't even like to sell things on CL anymore...

A guy got killed out here trying to buy something off someone off of CL. People are freaking terrible.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I all but halted my craigslist selling as we just moved into our new house.  I didn't mind people coming by when I was in a condo, but I don't want people coming to my house especially since my pregnant wife is home more than I am. With all the no show/flakers I wouldn't meet up to sell something either.  Being in Northwest Indiana I end up with people traveling from Gary to pick up items, had a lady with a tattoo on her forehead, people who I feel guilty taking money from and too many people wanting to talk for hours.

Long Craigslist story:

I was also traveling to property I inherited to sell vehicles, farm equipment and other crap.  I was selling $1,750 of corrugated metal sheets to side/roof a barn.  I had a guy call me tell me he was very interested but couldn't come for a couple weeks, wanted "his girl" to meet me downtown Chicago where I work to give me the money so I could hold it for him.  I told him it was good, that I would hold it for him and we could meet down there in a couple weeks and he could just pay me then.

He shows up in a tricked out Escalade pulling a trailer, looked and talked like a (wannabe?) gangster, he was only in his 30's but walked with a cane and looked like he was going to collapse at any time, I forget the story but he was shot or something and showed me some scars and stuff.  He gave me the cash right away so I figured let’s get this loaded so I can be on my way.  He brought a cousin to help with the loading, so we load up the sheets from one location and then go to a large pole barn where the bulk of the sheets were.  All the while the guy is talking about how he sleeps with a gun under his pillow and doesn't go anywhere without it, pulling out weed to smoke and asking if I wanted a hit...

So me and the cousin start loading the stuff from the barn and the guy asks if I was selling anything else (the barn was cluttered with tools and other crap), I say when I have time I'll sort through things and sell most everything.  He asked if he could look around, and would ask if I would sell "x item", and I would say yeah, he loaded up a dozen or so containers full of tools and stuff and after we had the sheets loaded and he had assembled these other items he asks how much I wanted for all the stuff he collected.  Since I already had gotten a good price from him on the metal sheets I tell him that I'd take $500 for all the other stuff he has taken.  He tells me that he will give me $200.  I tell him there is no way I could do that and start to look through the items he has in there and show him that just in one or two containers there is a few hundred dollars of stuff.  He said that he already gave me the rest of the money he has and that he only has $200 so I flat tell him no way.  He starts to get belligerent and is going on about how he just did all the work for me by collecting up the valuable items...  At this point things are not looking good and we are in the middle of nowhere and I have about $4500 cash on me from this sale and the ones earlier that morning.  I tell him that if he wants to pay $200 I would have to take stuff back and start to pull items from what he has gathered and then say for $200 you can have that.  He bitches some more and said I took back all the items that he really wanted, calling me all kinds of names.  Finally he says that he would give me $400 for all the stuff he originally collected, I laughed and said what about only having $200 and he snared back that his cousin has some money.  I pulled out a ncaa football that I told him I wouldn't sell but I'd take the $400 for the rest as I didn't see another good ending to the situation.  He bitched that he wanted it for his son and I let him know I would grab another football from the house but that that one was worth more to me and would not include it.  He agrees and we load up the rest of the items.

I grab the football and a car jack we discussed earlier, he asked if there was more stuff in the house he could look at, I told him I was late for an appointment and didn’t have the time to hang out any longer.  He leaves and I lock up and head home and consider my lesson learned.  I get a phone call from him about an hour later and he asked if I saw stuff from his load on the road, I let him know that I headed the opposite direction so I wouldn’t have seen anything but ask why.  He said a truck waved him down on the expressway and let him know that he was losing the metal sheets and other things were flying out.  I tell him that sucks and add that I wasn’t involved in the securing of the items.  He continues on and says he ruined his $2,000 rims driving over a curb to turn around.  I tell him that it sucks and I hope he is able to get anything that flew off and get off the phone.   I thought he called again, but looking back at emails he didn't call, he sent this:
"ant we made it home, thanks to god.. we did loose a  few thing's but i guess the guy's that picked it up had to earn something,, lol.... i also wannna come back out nextweek to pick up a few thing's u didnt put back on the trailor, and im also gonna give u an extra 50 dollar's for the stuff as im looking at some of it and u did give me a deal,  we got alot of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---... so i guess ill see u nextweek, that's if u want me coming out... i should of bought the tiller, so dont sell it. that and the red little tool box we forgot, and a bag of little stuff i believe was with those lights u took off, a bunch of little stuff in pack's for the car, lighter's, fuses, etc.. talk to ya later...Danny"

I replied back telling him I wouldn't be around and that we can call it all even.

I am guessing that he made up all the crap about the sheets sliding out and his vehicle damage but if he was flying down the interstate I don’t think he strapped down the back edges of the sheets so who knows.

Usually the types of items you sell dictate the type of people that would be purchasing them, but this was not the case.

Yea CL is more of a hassle than it's worth. I buy stuff from CL, but I find it inconvenient to sell on CL. Too many weirdos.
