New SKG Jukebox Update, 0.83, available
« on: May 30, 2011, 12:30:27 am »
SKG Jukebox has been updated to version 0.83. This is a fairly minor update. Here are the issues addressed:

# Fixed bug in the Linux version, where the Help screen was displaying a blank page.
# Improved the CD detection function in the  CD Ripper function in the Windows version.
# Fixed bug that would sporadically crash app switching from one track to the next.

There is also a workaround for the problem where the track plays but no sound comes out. I would like one of my regulars to try it, sonce I can't seem to duplicate the issue. The next time this happens, hit the F12 key, and see if the sound comes back.

There is also a new source package, for any programmers who wish to examine, and perhaps improve, the source code.

BTW, I have been tracking the download statistics on MediaFire. I know at least 400 people have downloaded the Jukebox, and around 50 have downloaded the source code. It's a little disconcerting that so few have commented on these boards. The more feedback I have, the better I can make this program. So share the love. For that matter, share the hate. But above all, share. Later.

It would be wonderful if you could start naming your file releases by version numbers.  I will check this one out today when I get home.  Thanks

I already do that with the Linux version. I'll start doing that on the Windows version with the next update. I will also add some sort of "About" screen so you can easily tell what version you are using.

BTW, in case anyone is interested, I've started work on what will someday be the SKG GameBox, a multi-emu frontend. It will have the same basic UI as the jukebox. I will post more information as this thing progresses. Later.

I've never tried installing one version over the next. I just remove the old version first. The uninstall won't remove your config files, so when you start up the new version, everything should work fine.

Hope everyone is having good experiences with the latest version. I am working on another update, which should be out next month. I am cleaning up the UI, getting rid of the scroll bars on the main screen, and doing some other programmer things to make the code more efficient. I am also working on an enhancement just for you, ego. I am trying to enable the program to load it's music library from an XML file, rather than reading the directory each time. This should cut the time needed for the initial load by 90% or more. Ego's collection of 5000 or so albums should load in seconds rather than minutes. Don't know, I don't have it working yet.

I am also working on the GameBox, and I could use a little help from any .NET programmers in the audience. The GameBox will have a similar UI to the Jukebox but will be written in C#. I am trying to create the 3D style buttons and the round buttons I used in the Jukebox in C# as opposed to Qt, and I'm a little stuck. If anyone out there who knows more about C# than I do could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Yes, it will play flac, as well as ogg files. It will also rip new CDs to either of those formats if you wish.

My bad. The Linux version will play ogg and flac, because those formats are part of most standard Linux distributions. Windows needs to be taught how to play these files. You will need the Direct Show filters for these formats. Go to http://xiph.org/dshow/ to install open codecs.

Hey ego.

After a fresh XP install, the first thing to do is install your motherboard drivers. They will include drivers for any onboard NIC, video or sound devices. The best bet, if you have another PC with internet, is to go to the mb manufacturer's website, and search for drivers by model number. If you like, you can e-mail me the make and model of your mb, and I will get the drivers for you and e-maiul them as an attachment, or just put them up on my Mediafire account and give you the download link. The new update is coming along. Loading the library from an XML file seems to be faster. You are the person I am counting on to tell me that though, since someone like you, with such a large collection, is a better test than I, with only a couple hundred albums. Look for the anouncement in a couple of weeks.

just got my driver issues sorted and now im playing skg with my new pre amp and amp (emotiva amps very good and affordable)

first thing i noticed is the juke loaded my albums much quicker , 10-12 seconds instead of minutes

played five songs from normal selecting with no problems

i think there are still some issues in the playlist , i loaded a couple of songs using config option , bam no sound but song counter moving ,had to reboot

love the option of adding now playing song to playlist , would like to see the juke recongnise that a song is already in there ala media player

would still like to see simple skinning options like change color of the alphabet or color of the artist or song track etc , and option to hide number buttons , a small options button hidden would be good instead of typing in 0000

still having some scrolling issues , especially through the k section it seems slower then other letters , id like to see if you hold your finger on the button a super speed like sk juke , it doesnt seem much unless you have a large album collection , i may have a couple of hundred albums in the b section and if i want a album in the middle it takes a while to get to it , i did change the default resolution on my screen from (approx as i cant remember exact ) 600-800 to  1000-1200 , i have a 4.3 screen , the problem with the 600-800 resolution was that the numbers onscreen take up at least one third of the screen with the higher resolution the album covers are bigger , this is why i want the number buttons smaller so i can make my album covers bigger

ill do a bit more testing later on and let you know

looking forward to the next update bigtime

i think there is a definite bug somewhere in the playlist option

i created a playlist

added a song using the add playing now to playlist , then when i saved and started to scroll it crashes

would also like to see when you open an album a play now button instead of going back to the tracklist , this would be great if it just replaced the song playing and kept the current playlist

also a problem when selecting add to playlist when there are no songs playing , that crashes the system , this is a small problem to me as i have mapped buttons to a griffen powermate

push the volume knob in once gives me add to playlist push in once long hold and ive mapped it to options

ego,

I tried to duplicate the bugs you were talking about, but couldn't. Could you provide some more detail?

New update is coming along, BTW. I was going to post it this evening, but found a serious bug in the CD Ripper screen, so I need to deal with this first. Expect the new update in the next week, or so. Things are also coming along with the Gamebox. I hope to have it ready for beta testing around the end of the year, if not earlier. An emulator frontend is less complex than a jukebox, but I don't know how long the Linux port will take. I will post some screen shots next month, I hope.

i found out that when i scrolled and it crashed it was crashing at the same spot , i removed one of the albums and the problem stopped, i played for another hour or two with no problems , i didnt go back to the playlists but ill give that a go again

i think there might of been a naming problem with the album , if i remember it was a martika album and it was named martika-martika , not sure if that would cause it to crash

ill give it more testing later on in the week and muck around with the playlist options again

hey skg

i think ive talked about this on before

is it possible for you to add a next letter option mapped to the up down arrows or any keys will do actually , my juke has left right buttons for scroll and the up down buttons i have do nothing , i want to go to the next letter as sk juke does , i know we have the alphabet but the buttons are so good when you only have to go a couple of letters and its such a waste not having them work

The up and down arrows actually control the volume of the currently playing track, but I think I can use the Page Up and Down keys for that. I will see if I can get that into the next update.

This program was working fine for me for a few days and now it crashes at startup even if I uninstall and reinstall. It started crashing after I removed a directory and went to add a new one.

It is a pretty cool program. I wish I could get it to work!

Slain,

Try removing the Config.txt file from the resources directory, if you are running the Windows version. Then restart the program. It will be as if you ran the program for the first time, and will recreate the Config file. Let me know if it works.

That did the trick. However, now I am having trouble with the key mappings. They work outside of my front end (Hyperspin). However, when I try to use these keys within Hyperspin, they no longer work as assigned. If I assign them through AutoHotkey, they do double duty (e.g. Numpad4 assigned to left scrolls left through items and enters the number 4 in the bottom left of the program).

Any ideas?

Not familiar with Hyperspin. I'll look up some information on it, and get back to you.

Update is coming soon. I am trying to track down a bug with the CD ripper screen that is causing a crash. Weird thing is, it is only happening in the Windows version. Once I get that squashed, and do some deployment testing, I'll post the update.

One of the main features of this update is just for you, ego. After you run the thing once, it will save information about the music library to an XML file, and will load from that file instead. This should make loading large collections like yours a lot faster. Of course if you make any changes you will have to re-scan your library, but there will be a button for that. If you add new albums using the integrated ripper, you should have no issues, it will write them to the file.

Later
