In Jim's defense, you are a keyboard commando nutbag. In your defense there is someone far worse on here, I'll secretly refer to him as Mr.X

I'll give you nutbag.  I haven't been a keyboard commando in quite some time now.   :hissy

I love interviews.  It is the very special time you have with a new employer, and all their little tricks that they like to play.

My best gag I tell them when they ask me what my goals are, is a excerpt from a Bayliner catalog showing my boat.  I tell them after I make the company rich  I plan to take the boat on a nice early retirement.

After that I tend to keep asking THEM questions, rather than the other way around.  Funny thing is:  That is what they want.  Research you company before hand.  Use the Internet way back machine and poke around some some interesting old company related story you can spring up.  Heck ask them for a tour of the facility and ask them where you office is.

Then I leave the best to the last, after sharing a joke with them or a funny story about a past job, I become all serious and ask them for the job.

With that formula I get 8/10 jobs I go for and I do get call backs from the ones that got away.

Be aggressive and do not be afraid.  Make it look like you don't need the move and really you are doing them a favor.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Yeah, great advice if you want to get stuck in a hellhole like England.  Everyone left in that country is descended from the people too lazy and/or stupid to flee Europe 100 years ago.  I'm sure those simpletons are easily impressed.

Yeah, PBJ? That quota of dooshy posts you're trying to reach? You passed it some time ago.

So anyways . . . . . got an email today telling me they are continuing forward with other candidates whose qualifications are more in line with this position.    :banghead:

Then you should do what I am doing.

Getting a degree.  Yes it is expensive, but to get a good job, you need to demonstrate that you have the right stuff.

The job market is over saturated.  You have to remember that you are the diamond in the rough.  Whatever you are currently doing is not enough otherwise you would have nailed it.

The business degree (two year Honors) costs £6K (at the moment) and I'm doing a language course at the same time.

I graduate next month with a HND in Software Development.  Will I get my dream job? Nope, but in two years I will.  You have to think in advance.  Otherwise you are just another cog.

What to do before then?  Flipping burgers?  Well whatever pays the bills, right?

Oh, if you have problems expressing yourself, look around for a ToastMasters support group in your area.  I did and I am much more confident, when it comes to public speaking, and it looks good on your Curriculum vitae.

With that formula I get 8/10 jobs I go for and I do get call backs from the ones that got away.

England is not a hellhole.  Its a country where nearly every immigrant in the world is heading to.  Simpletons?  I wouldn't qualify them as simpletons, ignorant maybe.

Benefits galore, and it is quiet and a slower pace.  Better than Vegas any day, especially now.  Taxed to death but we all seem to have enough for booze and holidays.

You want a hellhole?  Try the Somalia etc.  My brother lives in Vegas and he says its an employment hellhole.

Dooshy posts indeed.  ::)

Thanks for the sweeping generalisation from all of us Brits.  I'm assuming you come from somewhere much more civilised and intelligent.

Or... Learn to work with your head and hands.  Someones gotta keep the toilets flushing, the roofs shingled...  Nothing wrong with a trade.  We've placed -way- too much weight on that 'degree' IMO.  There's not much you can learn in college that can't be outsourced.  Tough to outsource a good electrician.
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

I agree 100%.  Far too much emphasis on degree's over here.  I agree education should be available and accessible to all, but vocational qualifications and apprenticeships should also be championed.

There are plenty of plumbers, electricians, builders, carpenters/joiners, brickies on unemployment in the UK right now.

I wish I could organise them and put them to work doing charitable causes like fixing dilapidated buildings for the homeless.    But that would be too easy.

A fair amount of these unemployed tradesmen are going into further education.  Which I think is a good idea until the economy improves.

But I do agree with your comment, and it is a shame that these tradesmen cannot be deployed to work on project for their city.  But there is no money, especially here in the UK.

Nice one.  I didn't think you'd notice the burn hidden in there.   ;D
