What is this mark on my new (used) LCD?
« on: May 23, 2011, 07:26:52 pm »

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

The auction description listed this screen as free of any marks or scratches, and listed the monitor as good-to-excellent condition. Yet, when I turn the thing on, I immediately notice this big mark in the lower right corner . . It looks like some kind of big blemish or burn. Its nothing I can clean on the outside. What is it? Burn?

This is now the 3rd monitor for this project that has completely fallen apart.   :-\

give the frame of the monitor a slight twist and see if it changes.

it might just be that the panel isn't quite in right or is screwed down too tight causing a pressure blemish.

Well I've twisted it, rotated, extended it up, tilted it, and no change unfortunately. Its a gorgeous monitor. Shame this thing kills it. I just can't get over it. You don't even notice it in bright colors, but in darkish grey, it sticks out like a soar thumb.

Damn, it looked like it was fading last night, but as I suspected, it was just because natural light wasn't hitting it. First thing this morning, I checked with high hopes, and its still there mocking me.

Easy fix or RMA? Anyone else? The seller is asking me to try different cables and computers, but I'm not holding my breath. He swears he's never had a single problem like this, which seems crazy to me because its very visible in certain conditions.

Its quite common in LCD panels. Its pretty much a manufacturing issue. If its under warranty, then contact them and see.

This thing is really baffling me. I went home at lunch and its all but gone in a black-screen, and only slightly visible in a dark-grey screen. It seems to fade as the monitor stays on, because it was painfully visible in a black screen this morning.

Look, you paid for a blemish free screen, it has a blemish. Send it back

Yeah, I gotta do it. Even at its best I'll still know its there and it isn't what I payed for. I just hope the seller doesn't try to pull anything.

This guy is actually giving me trouble, claiming he can't see anything in the pic. I can't believe it. It is clear as day when you first turn the thing on, and he's playing dumb. I see it fine in that pic. Am I crazy? Isn't it right there visible in the red circle??

I see something, but the picture is so poor that it's tough to tell what's going on.  I agree that it looks like the plastic frame is torqued or something causing stress on the panel which can cause localized discoloration like that.  It may also be an issue with the backlight.

I'd take a picture using a REAL CAMERA.  Don't use your cell phone.  Despite the "zomg 8 megapixel!" rating it may have, it's an awful camera.  If you can, use a tripod or similar stand and use a low ISO setting.  The exposure time will be high, but that's why you have the tripod.  This will minimize noise from the camera.  Don't downscale the picture when you upload it.  Yes, it'll be huge, but it might give someone a hope of figuring out what's up with it.

The guy is now being something of a smart-@$$ and basically calling me out on lying, or being over-sensitive, and even doctoring photos. I'm gonna take more pics tonight and send them to ebay. (I've already opened a case)

The pic was actually taken with a camera, not a cell-phone, but I did down-scale it. I assumed the seller would just see the mark and be a stand-up guy about it, but I guess I'll have to really show whats wrong here. The entire right side of screen around this mark is somewhat brighter, and it goes all the way up to the top. Its only most prevalent in the corner.

There is going to be a lighter portion along the edges due to the way the backlighting is. It's really only noticeable on a  black only screen.

What I'm seeing is a cloudiness of "light" in the corner.

I agree... Get yourself some really nice high quality pictures of the issue taken dead on to the screen, and maybe at 20 or 30 degrees off axis to show it doesn't change or disappear or a weird reflection.

It looks like the surface is "scuffed" or something. This would only be really visible on black backgrounds and when light was hitting the screen.

I sent 20+ images including pictures of the mark from all different angles, the shipping box, and the monitor itself. The guy still wouldn't cooperate and starts building straw-men about professional vs commercial monitors (as if its entirely normal for "commercial monitors", even ones in the $500 price range,  to have scuffs and blotches) and basically treating me like I'M the bad guy. He offered $5 partial discount out of spite, and at that point I just had to stop communicating with him its now in Ebay's hands. Ebay said they'd get back to me in 72 hours. Its now been 5 days, and nothing.

Another massive road-block in this machine! What is with this thing?? Bad luck from day 1! I will NEVER buy anything used again, especially off ebay. Its a headache about 80% of the time. Looking back I would have been better off buying a new kit, new monitor, etc.

Oh is that all? Am I out of line in expecting things without marks, blemishes, or burn-in on the screen when it says so in the description? Its the sole reason I bought the thing. Other listings state "may be marks, light scratches, etc." and I ran for the hills, and I would have for this POS too had I known.

My "expectations" are not the problem.

Didn't say they were. Like you said you would have been better off buying new. But when you buy something used, you'll have fewer headaches if you don't expect it to be unmolested. Yea, his description said otherwise. Yea, the seller is a d-bag. But you didn't buy virgin equipment. Buying parts is like buying oats. If you want quality oats, you have to pay a fair price. If you want oats that have been through the horse already, well, those are a little cheaper.

Got ya. I'm just still annoyed at this whole thing. The damn thing is packed up in my house nearly 2 weeks later now, and once again I don't know what I'm using as a monitor yet. Keeping score of my monitor adventures in this hobby:

1st monitor, display model CRT TV - Burn, unusable (unable to return)
2nd monitor, 20" LCD 4:3 - Burn, unusable (returned)
3rd monitor, 25" TV - Never delivered, refunded through Paypal
4th monitor, SFII CE arcade monitor - cannot get to work
5th monitor, 24" LCD - blemish, open Ebay case

UGH.

Next time, factory sealed, brand new, warrantied 25" LCD wide-screen monitor. Thats it. Done.

Sounds like a plan.

If it were me I would try to get that arcade monitor working. I picked up a free 25" arcade monitor off of CL not too long ago. Guy said it wasn't working. Thought it would be good, cheap practice for working on arcade monitors without the risk of damaging one of my working ones. Got it home, plugged it, it worked fine. I have the exact opposite problem as you, too many working monitors (5 of them, of which 3 are arcade monitors) laying around and not enough machines to use them in. Anyway, if you already consider the arcade monitor a loss, it sounds like a great candidate to acquire/hone some monitor troubleshooting skills.

Hopefully ebay rules in your favor, and you find a nice monitor to get your project one step closer to complete.

I got my LCD used from Ebay, it had some artifacts on it, basically had some grey spots on it that looked like there was some lint stuck between the screen and the panel.  E-mailed the dude and was like "WTF!  you said that it was a flawless screen"  He had like 10 he was selling, took it back, sent me a different one, no problem, I told him I didn't care what the case looked like, as long as the screen was clear and there were not scratches.  Got a replacement without much headache.  I would buy a used one again, I would just make sure to buy one from a reputable seller that has multiple for sale, or have more communication with the seller before hand.

Sucks about your situation.

Ebay actually ruled against me!? Buyer Protection my @$$!

"Based on information provided in the case, the item you received matched the seller's description but you no longer wanted the item. eBay Buyer Protection doesn't cover situations where an item is accurately described."

In what universe, does saying a screen is free of "scratches, mars, etc" match with the screen having a big white blemish on it?? Unbelievable! Never again will I buy from an auction on Ebay. I've totally been screwed.

Yikes that sucks. :( I'm guessing they ruled against you because it's too difficult (for them I mean ::)) to tell that the monitor was marred from your pics. I've dealt with some cool people on ebay, but the jackasses ruin it. After I got ripped off the third time, I decided it was the last time and I haven't been back to ebay since.

It's hard to tell from your pic, but since it's a 24 inch LCD, I'm assuming it's a widescreen, and it looks like the blemish is mainly in the corner. Are you planning on playing PC games on this? If it's just being used for mame and older console games, maybe it's still usable since those games should be pillarboxed anyway to maintain the proper aspect ratio. Put a bezel around the 4:3 area and you might not even notice the imperfection.

I'm sorry you had an issue with ebay.

I would guess the guy got in touch with them out ahead of you.  Generally the first person to contact them wins, in my experience, it becomes a "he said, she said" kinda deal.

He also *clearly* knew the monitor was blemished if he was giving you a hard time about a return.  Sucks.

I almost always buy (even used) from companies through ebay.  I've had really good experiences with pro audio gear on there, but sometimes it seems like that's a community within a community.  Also, you're generally businesses/studios dealing with other businesses/studios, as opposed to individuals with our arcade stuff.

Sorry that didn't work out!  Have you tried decasing it?  the LCD i'm using for my bartop had a similar problem because the case/frame was warped and when i decased it, the issue went away.

I appealed then called right away. Turns out they only looked at the sellers pics and not mine. After they tried to convince me the only way to send the pics was by fax, I finally went through to the pics step by step with the guy .. You'd figure they'd get to my pictures themselves through the messages between me and the seller, but they didn't. Buyer protection huh? We'll see what happens, but the customer service guy himself said he saw a cloud on the screen.

. . and ruled against again. The reason? Because the mark fades over time in monitor use (after an hour its harder to see), it can not be considered a 'permanent mark', even though the mark returns after shutting down and even though, you know, the LISTING made no mention of the mark and explicitly said there was none . So because I was candid with the seller and tried to work thing out with him, I lose.  Ebay are a bunch of hustlers.

"Buyer Protection" is a complete joke. They want everybody's crap up there. Never again.

DO NOT TRUST EBAY TO BACK YOU WHEN BUYING USED ELECTRONICS. Lesson learned.

I guess "false advertising" is in the eye of the beholder. This also happens sometimes when buying a NEW monitor, but at least you have the option of returning it. I think ebay is in the business of siding with their sellers more often than not because those are the guys that keep them in business. Buyers are dime a dozen.

ebay doesn't make money off buyers... they couldn't give 2 cowpies about buyers.

they have to keep their sellers happy cause they get commission from the sales.
