PS3 YLOD
« on: May 20, 2011, 06:15:42 pm »
I was looking online about the Yellow Light Of Death.

I am looking at buying a dead PS3 and try fixing it, or buy a second hand one for £110.

Its a 40GB model but I had heard stories about them.

Should I wait and buy a new one - or get my feet wet with repair?
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I decided to buy an used PS3.  The 40GB models are prone to errors and freezing, and after reviewing the methods to revive it, it would be a better bet to pickup a £100 second hand model with warranty.

I hear people are ditching their PS3s for the Xbox 360 due to the Playstation Network fiasco.

Well it really depends where you stand with online gaming.  If it's a top priority for you, maybe you'll want to "wait-and-see" it (despite Xbox Live being more reliable for now, "free" is big selling point for some people).  If you're more concerned with the single player experience, it shouldn't matter too much.

Also, I guessing it's more of a "statement" to Sony rather than a gaming decision for certain people.

Jesus, is there ever going to be a period where 'wait and see' is over?

What is the method to fix the YLOD? The heat gun reflow method? I seem to recall an article/video about that but now I can't find it. All I can find is http://www.ps3lightsfix.com/ and a bunch of crappy websites that link back to it.

Aggghh... Wife is pestering me to mow the lawn. No more time.

That's the method I used on my fat 60gb launch model... unsuccessfully.  I did the reflow and my PS3 worked for about a week before YLODing again.  The second fix I applied flux and reflowed again. that time it lasted for 10 minutes.. I  almost smashed it with a hammer at that point.   I gave up on trying to fix it and went out and bought a brand new 120gb slim.

Here is a link to the video...  very thorough and well done, I just didn't have any luck with it.

and here's the flux video

I had a broken ps3, and now have a broken xbox 360 (grr)

Anyways, the guy told me that once you fix an YLOD ps3 it will YLOD again, the issue is when it will. He recommended placing it vertically after fixing and not inside an entertainment center, but in a very well ventilated area.

Good luck with your fixes.  I bought two broken PS3's last year.  One had YLOD the other supposedly just had issues reading discs.  Turns out it was a bad laser.  Replaced it with the good one from the YLOD machine and it worked for about 10 minutes then overheated.  Took it apart and replaced the thermo paste on the CPU and GPU chips and it fixed the overheat problem but now the video freezes after about an hour.  I think I didn't get a good contact between the GPU and it's heatsink when I replaced the thermo paste the first time.  Need to check that out again but haven't felt like messing with it.  Maybe one day when I'm not temped to take it out in the back and put it out of it's misery.
