Wode for Wii

I'm a little mystified by this.

Is it actually a storage device in and of itself or is it just a bridge between your Wii and HDD(s)? Why? Doesn't the Wii already have USB ports?

What does this thing offer that the software tools don't offer? I mean, if you're shelling out $80-$100 for a Wode that entails opening up your Wii to install at least part of it and permanently marrying your Wii to the Wode (which, IMHO, is slightly fugly with that silly LCD screen and the wart of a button) it should at least offer something of benefit over the software tools.

I'm missing something. Has someone ever used this?

WODE can do GC ISOs...  Can a softmodded Wii do that yet?  I'm not up to date with the Wii scene.

It seems a bit expensive... a softmod is more than adequate for backing up your games. Some games are more difficult to get working on a softmodded wii (i.e. red steel 2 & monster hunter tri) but most games work fine (new super mario bros, donkey kong country, mario galaxy series, etc etc..). It seems like the reason to buy this would be to play backed up gamecube games since it's a bit more difficult to do so on a soft modded wii.

On a soft modded wii you can
-play wii games via wii loader
-add channels via wad installer (channels appear as .wad fies)
-play .wad files backed up to an SD card or DVD via "uloader"
-use emulators
-i hear you can play gamecube games backed up to DVDs, but never figured that one out

Seems pointless and behind the times if it just came out.  It's a pretty package on what can be done via software mod easily.

The Wiis made in the last year and a half or so can't read burned DVDs, so there was no way to play Gamecube backups until this came along.

Basically, the ONLY benefit of the device over current methods is as crashwg said.  You can put your old GameCube games on the HDD.

From what I've read, softmods and even modchips will never have the capability of doing so.

It would be nice to make my GC games ISOs, but it's not worth the cost of a WODE.

Actually this isn't true.....  While it will be impossible to rip GC discs directly on the wii, using a pre-existing image and running it on an emulated version of IOS is possible, it's just cumbersome and not worth it... much like the wode. 

Btw, they changed the name of that thing... it's been around (I think in development) ever since the wii was cracked.  That's why I didn't recognize it.  It's just a terrible idea, especially considering a softmod is so easy to do and it will let you easily run games off a HDD.

No  it's implemented RIGHT NOW.  You can run emulated NAND with various homebrew.  You can also take any disc image, including a GC image, convert it to a special format, set it to be the inserted disc, and it'll run!  The thing is the conversion process is rather lengthy, you can't compress the images, and each time you wish to change games (unless they've fixed it, I haven't been following) you have to exit the nand and start it up again. 

For me and most people it isn't worth it... but if you want to run some GC isos then you can.  I haven't checked on this process in months... by now it might be more user-friendly.

Now that IS a hardware problem.  The wii doesn't navtively support sdhc... it can be added to various homebrew apps, but it requires an unofficial software emulation layer that is buggy and doesn't work well. 

Serioulsy though, in what way is a sdhc card better?  A 16 gig card can cost a decent amount of money, where you can get a 500 gig or more harddrive and an adaptor for around 60 bucks.

Yeah... I have around 5-10 gigs of my hdd setup for nand emulation just in case I ever want to use it for something.  It's been months since I've played with it though.... I think you *might* have to keep a portion of the Nand on the sd card, but the games and applications themselves can be on the hdd
