"Imagine wondering if your ATM really meant "have a nice day," or if it was being sarcastic."

"A world full of robots that understand information and abstract concepts could be a world full of artificial intelligences secretly laughing behind our backs for our fascination with cat pictures on the internet."

Computers will never be "intelligent" until they can understand the hilarity of internet cat pictures.

If the goal of this project is to understand how language evolves, but the robots are programmed to follow a precise method for creating and evolving a language, would there really be much to be learned from this?

Sure it would be cool to see the programming play out, but I don't know they would really be accurately learning how language evolves.

It's one step. That's how progress works.

Cramming 1000 years of evolution into a couple days of runtime?  Sounds like the standard use of computing power to test out a theory and see if the outcome resembles expectations.

Eh... people seem to confuse access to data, data manipulation and calculating power with intellegence.  Computers that are "super intellegent" have intellegence around the level of a drone ant and that's being generous.

Until a computer becomes self-aware it is merely a machine.  Fortunately computers don't evolve like we do, so there isn't any danger of that ever happening.  That is unless some idiot writes code for a machine specifically to make it self aware, and even then it's a long shot.

They don't have to understand.  All they have to do is fake it.  Faking their way through is probably more human than actually taking a moment to comprehend what is going on.

Have you asked such questions before?
But wasn't it fun to think you won the lottery, just for a second there???

I faked it every time we were together.  I thought you could tell.
