Best settings for a LG W2600HP-BF LCD Monitor
« on: May 09, 2011, 04:38:51 pm »
So I purchased this LCD monitor off ebay a couple weeks ago.  Its a 16:10.  Dont have it installed in my cab but did hook it all up to my computer to see how things look on this display.  Have to say I'm pretty pleased.  One questions though:

I have the resolution set to 1024*768 in windows and on the settings in my front end which seems to be the best fit for displaying the front end Maximus Arcade.  My question here is what, if any, resolutions setting should I have setup for Mame?  19" vertical games like Tron, Donkey Kong, etc. all show up with the black bars on the sides - which I expected.  However, I was surprised to see that games like Metal Gear, MK, etc. are using full use of the entire display.  From my perspective it doesnt appear as though they are "stretched" either.

I'm not a resolution expert and am in no way a "purist" so it all seems perfectly fine for me as is but was simply curious what others are doing resolutions on LCD panels.

1920 x 1200 is the monitors native resolution. displaying anything but 1920 x 1200 will be a less than optimal picture.

1024 x 768 is introducing stretching (since 1024 x 768 is a 4:3 aspect ratio) and pixel doubling (to fill in the unused portions of the 4:3 picture on the 16:10) unnecessarily.

Understood but the FE MA doesnt allow for resolutions greater than 1280*720.  And when I use that resolution its too big for the screen (or is this because my windows resolutions is set at 1024*768?).  My question was more inside Mame.  When I was changing resolutions in windows I dont recall seeing much, if any, difference in the picture quality/size inside of Mame.  So is Mame just set at whatever its set at?  I suppose thats my real question, are there resolution settings inside Mame that should be tweaked due to the monitor I have.

So in case anyone really gives a crap, setting the monitors resolution to its native 1920*1200 makes the FE WAY too small.  Its just this little box in the middle of the screen surrounded by black.  It doesnt really impact Mame at all though.  So I've reset the resolution to 1024*768 which seems to fill out the screen nicely on the FE and it all looks good to me.

Dang, you got hands on the HOLY W2600HP (not the H-PF I hope)! Still regret I did not buy 10 of those when still available, now I have only 1.
Do you like the gamut! OMG it is amazing. Run Mega Man or Darkstalkers in it.....
Drive it 1920x1200 and find a 1920x1200 frontend! I customized Emulaunch with 1920x1200 graphics.

Well I hope I dont have this H-PF you mentioned.  From what I can tell the monitor's model number is as stated in the thread title.

I suppose HS is a 1920*1200 FE but damn that thing is impossibly difficult for me to setup.....

Well after successfully mounting this in my cabinet I'd have to say I'm pleased but for one thing.  The monitor is mounted a higher than dead center.  When I am sitting down playing games the viewing angle fades the picture out some.  I didnt notice till I stood up but when I didthe picture was noticeably brighter when standing.

I'm using tinted glass would that make a difference on viewing angle?

No.

Viewing angle has everything to do with design and the way the light is polarized as it passes through the LCD layers.

I checks my 2600. It stays about the same brightness when the center of vision is within its bounderies, so 20cm up and down and 30cm left and right. When I go down further, brightness becomes a little less, but gamma and colours stay good. Tinted glass would make things worse, as it dims brightness, exactly what you seem to lack.
BTW, this screen can be set to insane brightness. Try to find another screen that does 450cd/m2!
I think the real solution is mounting it lower or at a better angle!
