Popular MAME cocktail setup?

Hey folks, I'm gearing up on a vertical cocktail cabinet (mame 135, XP, Mala) and from what I've searched, it seems like I'd keep my windows orientation horizontal (hidden eventually), use the vertical setting of my frontend, and FLIP EACH ROM TO COCKTAIL in the tab> dip switch settings?  I've got about a thousand (vertical-US-3button) roms to do, is that really the way to go, or is there a blanket 'vertical cocktail' setting i can use to affect MAME universally?

Sorry I know this is well worn territory, but no ones really come out and said 'yes you'll do all these by hand' in my searches

Have you checked out the cocktail setting in Mame.ini to see if it can help?  I know you can setup config files or controller files to do this too.  Maybe CFGMagician can help.

I'm not an expert or even close on this.  I just wanted to throw out a couple of ideas while you wait for someone who can get you a better answer.  Maybe you can play with Mame.ini to get it working.

I have virtually the same machine as you (cocktail, arcade monitor, vertical, 3 buttons, u360 sticks, xp, mala) and my games list is about 350 tops.  Not sure if you're including all the clones, but that 1000 roms number seems really high.

I did all of mine by hand, not only to get to see what all games it supported, but also to playtest all of them.  Even if a game is advertised to support screen flipping, it may not, or the controls may not flip too, etc.  there's always a few of them that just bug out, so you will likely want to try them all anyway just to make sure.  Have some beer, invite a friend over for playtesting and make a couple evenings of it.  It'll be so worth it in the end.

Thanks!  yeah, absolutely willing to archive up my entire system and make it available to you.  I'm on a fairly crusty version of MAME (like 111 or something, from a couple years back) and haven't updated my mala in eons either.  Drop me a PM, it'll inspire me to put some more work into the machine.

The one thing that I have been meaning to do for a long time too is generate a 1 player, vertical, 3 button list so that on lonely nights I can play some different games than just what the cocktail supports.  I would need to have that list only available via special access so that it doesn't get flip on during parties.  It's funny that I'm the list guy, and haven't even used my own romlister tool to generate that 1 player list yet.

At the hyperspin forums we are building a special cocktail setup that looks just awsome,Its got a few games  but thanks to Jeepguy81 we are getting the best cocktail setup so far, looks nice and its growing all the time.Plus he added some calsic games that i wouldnt mind to have on a cocktail cab like Asteroids. check it out...
