Control panel fixing to cab.
« on: May 08, 2011, 02:56:13 pm »
Question: how should i fix the CP to the cab? the cabinet i am restoring originally used a piano hinge and i think it looked ugly;

-----------------
cp
-----------------
hinge
-----------------
cab

the CP also has latches inside that i will reuse on the left and right sides as usual.

i need some ideas for securing the front edge of the CP to the cab without the hinge. angle bracket springs to mind. are there any other innovations here that i couldnt find?

Couple of thoughts:

1) I have seen people use a Euro concealed cabinet hinge. This doesn't require access to the inside while closed, but does demand some careful measuring to install. Also you have to use a forstner bit or something similar to route out a hole for the hinge.

2) If you have an access hole from the back or bottom and can get your hand inside there, you could do a latch type hinge with a cleat. Might be a paid to line it up centered on the CP box, but if you nail some interior strips on the underside is will fit like a deck lid. The latch would then hold it in place.

Thanks for the reply!

I do indeed have access from the back.

what do you mean by 'interior strips'? whats a 'deck lid'?

Basically you could take small strips of wood, say 1/2" square stock and staple them to the underside of the CP just inside the box. When the CP is closed and the wood is on the interior edge of the box, it will keep the panel from sliding around laterally. All you have to do then is keep the CP from lifting up vertically, which could easily be accomplished with a cleat type latch.

I recently mated up an existing stand-alone control panel with a new cab, using cheap LCD brackets:
