Uh-Oh! Project #2 arrives ahead of schedule.
« on: August 29, 2003, 01:25:33 am »
Well, I was hoping #1 would be slightly more finished before #2 arrived but....Who can argue with the magic word "free".

Here it is in all its glory!

Overall the cab is really solid. NO water damage, minimal wear. Only bad thing is the 400 holes in the original metal CP.
Anyone guess what it started life as?

I don't think that is a Baby Pac, even if it is, those cabinets are a dime a dozen, it is only working ones that are hard to find.

I'll have a dozen then, please ;D

Seriously, though.. can't find a non-working one down here, at least not for a sane price :/

I just remember people having trouble giving away stripped Baby pac-Man cabinets on RGVAC a while back.

I briefly considered buying some of that cheap repro Baby Pac sideart, but finally decided that I would never have a use for it, as the only way I am ever getting a Baby Pac-Man is if I stumble onto one at a garage sale, or snag one for $25-$50 out of the paper.

having all those holes in the CP really isn'ty even a problem. Being metal, it's going to be sturdy. If you drop some art down on it, cover it with lexan, and only drill out the holes you want to keep you're good to go.

Not really sure if it is worth restoring. All he has there is an empty shell of a fairly common game (3rd most common laserdisk game). It would cost more to restore than it would to buy a restored one.

I'm sure he did.. but, yeah, Paige is right.. consider what you would have to buy and it really adds up.. sideart, marquee, LD player, discs, boards, monitor, etc., etc., etc.  If you can even find all that stuff (...most of which you probably can't :P), it would be far cheaper to buy a game with at least the player, sideart, and a monitor :/

I agree completely. I don't intend to "restore" the cabinet to origional, but I don't intend to hack it up into 1000 pieces with a 16' wide control panel either.

It will get new black vinyl side covering, new t-molding and paint. A new CP under/overlay, and a tasteful marquee.

Due to the small CP size, I think AT most, this machine will become a 2player dedicated fighter cab. But I'm open to suggestions!

That isn't my game, it belongs to "ThePunk". I stay totally away from laserdisc games. They are a bigger money pit than vectors even. I think I just saw an untested Thayer's Quest DISC (just the disc) sell on ebay for $455. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3239479157

That is totally NUTS. You end up spending like $1500 on a game that you memorise in a week, but that doesn't matter, because it is too valuable to actually turn on anyway.

Oh, and for people who DO want some hot laserdisc action. The thing to do with those stripped Dragon's lair 2 cabinets isn't to restore to DL2, but to restore to Space Ace '91, because every DL2 cabinet came with a Space Ace '91 conversion kit, and thus there are still a TON of NOS Space Ace 91 conversion kits floating around, where all you really have available for DL and DL2 is repro stuff.

Oh, wow. Even Space Ace stuff is getting really expensive.

Assuming you already had a stripped Dragon's lair cabinet, you could have built a Space Ace off ebay for ONLY $1650

$811 Space Ace kit with all hardware. Comes with an "untested" laser disc player (---my bottom---, if they have the disc, they can test the player, that puppy is dead).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3238101451&category=13718

$225 Laserdisc player, new in box

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3238261655&category=13716

$155 Sideart

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3237504251&category=13718

$32 "untested" LED scoreboard (doesn't appear to come in the kit above, although the above kit DOES come with a new overlay for said scoreboard)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3238757974&category=13718

Wiring Harness $150

http://www.dragons-lair-project.com/community/classifieds/ViewItem.asp?ItemID=1811

Mad guesses on a few items.

$200 New 19" monitor (including shipping).

$50 Cinematronics coin door (the laser guys have made these the most valuable ones).

$30 Cinematronics power supply (hope it is not worth much more, since I just gave one away).

That comes to $1653, not counting any other tiny little cabinet doohickies that probably cost a fortune, and not counting a Dragon's Lair cabinet itself, and those seem to run from a few hundred for a stripped one, right up to $1050 for a repro "dedicated" Space Ace cabinet (double the price of the sideart if you get the dedicated version, as that art is different, and costs twice as much).

Even if you were serious, you should still consider finding a cab with *something* in it.. it wouldn't be that hard, and would surely save you big $$$ in the long run.

But, there are a few thousand laserdisc nuts out there, and I would bet bucks that if you pimped that cabinet around on the laser forums and RGVAC that someone would probably give you a working 25" JAMMA cabinet for it.
