Portland for the long weekend - any suggestions?
« on: April 20, 2011, 12:28:56 pm »
Other than Ground Kontrol, which is a must...

I've been told the breweries are great there, and I should also check out the Voodoo Doughnut shop.

Any other suggestions on what's good in Portland?  I'm only driving down for the long weekend.

Multinomah Falls, if you're the outdoorsy type!

The main store (Voodoo) on 3rd is closed for renovations, so you'll miss out on that.

For breweries, might check out Pyramid, good food, decent beer. Also Bridgeport, Widmer, or any of the other umpteen breweries. Many of the McMenamins are pretty cool if you are into historic buildings and eclectic decor.

If you are into hiking, then Forest Park, Multinomah Falls (as suggested, and great sight even if not hiking).

Powells books on Burnside is a great book store (and near GroundKontrol).

If you are bringing kids, then you might want to check out OMSI, Oaks Amusement Park, or the Portland Children's Museum next to the Zoo.

I guess it really depends on what you are into or who you are with.

Thanks for the suggestions so far! As well as the info on Voodoo.

My wife and I are going with a few friends, we all don't have kids.

We like drinking at divey/comfy bars (real city culture there), enjoy seeing touristy sites, love to eat all kinds of food (looking for those small hole-in-the-wall gems). I'm not sure we'll have time for a hike, but I'll post it to the crew and see if there's any interest.

We'd also like to find some decent shopping spots, outlets, etc.
The Canadian dollar is doing really good right now and Oregon has no sales tax...so we're looking to bring back some stuff!

Some friends of mine suggest:
- Mississippi district boutique shopping
- Signature Room for fancy drinks and view of city
- One or Two of the many Breweries

Any more suggestions are welcome!

Shopping:
Outlet Mall in Troutdale (east of Portland and on the way to Multnomah Falls)
Woodburn Outlet mall - big outlet mall (South of Portland about 30-40 min drive on I-5)
NW 23rd for the "upscale" shops and some great resturants.
Bridgeport Village off of I-5 in Tigard
Pioneer Place downtown Portland

You might also want to try Huber's. It's Portland's oldest bar. It's downtown and very swanky.

Good call. I'll second that, make sure to order Spanish Coffees.

Oh, and for Huber's there are two seating areas. Make sure to request to be seated in the back area. You may want to call ahead for reservations.

opt2not - where are you driving down from?  Vancouver?

If so, any suggestions for cool places to go in Vancouver BC?  I've been many times, but the wife and I are heading up there for a long weekend (this weekend).

Typical stuff we've done:

Granville Island - lunch and shopping
Gastown - dinner and drinks
Capilano suspension bridge - cool but kinda touristy
Day trip over to Victoria
Stanley park - both by bike, beach, walking, and the zoo there
Robson Street - shopping and dining

We haven't been since the Olympics, so we're interested to see what sorts of changes there are.  Also, we're looking for a cool nightspot to hear music and drink.  We're staying just west of Gastown, but will cab to other areas for nightlife...

Opt2not: You should visit the Restoration Hardware outlet store in Tualip!

Boykster: Go visit St Augustine's if you love beer. They had a really nice chocolate mint microbrew last time I visited that was delicious. And if you're into jazz, The Cellar is usually a good place to visit, although it looks like this weekend they're doing a live cd recording.

They don't have bars and restaurants in Canada?
Nope, we usually just congregate at the center of town, where there's a giant beer-filled trough, and synchronously dunk our faces in taking massive gulps of brew till we pass out from lack of oxygen. If you're ever up in Canada be sure to ask someone about it.

Yeah, Vancouver.

Additional stuff you can check out here:
- VanDusen Botanical Garden is pretty, if you're into that kinda thing
- If you like hiking, lots of people go up to do the "Grouse-grind"  up Grouse Mountain.  I personally like hiking up Mount Stawamus (aka The Chief) better. It's a small drive up north, on the way to Whistler but the trails are nicer and less crowded with people.
- Whistler!  It's only a 2.5 hour drive up...lots of cool outdoorsy stuff to do there

- If you've been to Granville Island, you might have ridden the Aqua Bus. If not, check it out, they travel up and down the English Bay and False Creek area  (the water surrounding downtown) and you can get a nice aquatic tour around the city.
- Lonsdale Quay has a nice Market as well, it's across the bridge from Downtown in North Vancouver. But Granville Island's is definitely better.
- If you like Sushi, Toshi's has some of the best sushi around. It's up on Main and 16th, and is usually packed, so you might have to wait in line. They don't take reservations 'cause their extremely popular. Actually, there are lots of boutiques, bars and restaurants on Main Street all the way up to 30th ave. I like The Whip, The 5 Point, The London Pub.
- On Commercial Drive (The Drive) is probably the best place to sit, drink and listen to live bands. There are many bars there that host music performances, Cafe Deux Soleil can usually be counted on for shows practically every night. Also, as Benevolence suggested, St. Augustine's!

- For nightlife, Granville Street downtown is happening. Just before the Olympics they started blocking it off from traffic during "night-life" hours, so it's a full-on party district then. Many bars and clubs down that street.
- In gastown my favourite bars there are The Blarney Stone (Irish bar with a live Irish Folk Band), Chill Winston is exactly that...chill.  Six Acres has probably the best beer list in town...lots of tasty brews.
- If you're here during a hockey night, and wanna see some rowdy Canadians get crazy, The Shark Club, Library Square (at the big Library) and G-Sports good places to go
- Yaletown also has a lot of loungy-type places to hang out. It's a bit more upscale, but there's a lot of good food places and bars. The Yaletown Brew Club has decent food, but the bar side of it gets happening on Friday/Sat nights
- ...and if you're downtown drinking, you gotta try some Poutine at Fritz (on Granville and Davie).  Poutine is a Canadian (french-Canadien) treat!  Fries, with gravy and cheese curds...the best drunk food.

Opt2not: You should visit the Restoration Hardware outlet store in Tualip!

Awesome!  Thanks for the insight both of you - sorry for the thread hijack  ;)

We've not taken the Aqua Bus, but it's on the list of things to do this time.  Looks fun!

I remember reading about the Portland self-cleaning house (in that Chuck Palahniuk alternative travel guide), and a quick Google search gave me this: http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/Content?oid=31340&category=23483

Sounds like fun?

No problem, glad you had fun! You and I lucked out on the weather this weekend.

Portland was great. I loved it, it's such an awesome city.
We really only had 2 days there to look around.  When we first got there, we went to Ground Kontrol...it was Mecca for me. Exactly what I've been missing from the glory days of the arcades...but with beer!
I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd of people, the place was packed and happening! There was a good mix of both guys and girls! There were about 25 games, and about 15-20 pinball machines upstairs. I immediately went straight for ol' faithful and played a bit of Robotron. I noticed that the high-score was only 900K, so I figured I"d throw a million up on it and move onto the other classics.  Played a bunch of Burgertime, Joust, Galaga, Asteroids, Tron, Discs of Tron, Star Wars (upright), Track and Field (though the buttons were pretty beat-up), and they had a 4player Pacman Battle Royal table. SO. MUCH. FUN. Also, their LCD slimmed-cut Xmen 6-player cabinet was very impressively converted. The screen was big and bright, and seemed that the machine was always in use.
The bar area was very cool too. Lit table-tops, and through-out the arcade there was tron-legacy-esque lit-up trimmings along the walls and furniture.
We drank and played, and just had a great time. That place really proves that you can open a place like that and be successful in this day in age.

The next day we had a wonderful brunch at Mother's Bistro & Bar, then did a lot of walking for our brewery crawl. We went to 4 breweries, drank a lot of beer (tons of great micro-breweries there) I have to say that my favourites were Rogue, and Bridgeport Brewery.  Bridgeport's crowd was better though, due to the Trailblazer's playoff game on tv.
After being fairly buzzed by 6pm, we went back to the hotel for a power-nap, then off to Huber's. Very cool place. The back drinking area felt like a speakeasy to me, one of those bars that were around during the prohibition days. Their Spanish coffee was both impressive to watch made, as well as tasty to drink. We ended up closing that place down!
Sunday, we were off to the Mississippi District, and the Woodburn outlet mall (south of Portland) to do some shopping.  Then came back up to watch the Canucks game at a pretty sweet Sports bar in Portland called Macadam's Bar and Grill. They were really great. They put us in our own room with a big projector screen and we had the hockey game all to ourselves!

All in all, this was a great small trip, and we'd love to go back to Portland again. 2 days really wasn't enough to see everything we wanted to, but I feel that we packed in a lot of things in that small amount of time.
Other than the large-ass-amount of driving, I've got no complaints. Oh, maybe one...I wanted to spend more time at the arcade. ;)

Great!  I didn't take many while I was there. I was too busy playing!
