54" plasma TV + HD quality picture + one of those shows on TLC showing morbidly obese people with their shirts off = blindness

Don't say I didn't warn you....

As a general rule of thumb, you don't want to be closer than 1 inch for every inch diagonal your tv is.  So for a 54 inch tv, 4 1/2 feet would be teh minimum distance.

when I went from my 32" to a 50 something inch tv, it made my eyes hurt.

it's cause the seating was still arranged for a 32", so when i watched TV, I had to use my eyes to look all over the place.

You need to do some eye exercises.  I use my eyes to look all over the place all the time and I barely break a sweat.

I'm not sure I like 1080p with big screens. It seems to make film look like video.

Its the smoothscreen / frame interpolation that makes film look like video, not 1080p

I noticed that some TVs in the stores look really awful, like the frame rate has been changed or something. Is this something that varies in quality from TV to TV? I don't seem to have this issue with my 50" Samsung.

This is a good link that discusses what it is, and how to fix it on your display.  The first thing I do when I'm demoing a display is turn off any frame interpolation. I want to view the source at the framerate it was meant to be viewed at....

http://hdguru.com/a-solution-to-the-dreaded-soap-opera-effect/2119/

For some things, it actually works well and improves the experience - sports especially, but for most film based content, it adds a really strange effect that some people really like, but others don't (me).

Thanks, Boykster! That explains everything. I also now understand why I don't have the issue since I have a plasma.

I agree, the effect is really weird and undesirable, especially if it is a movie you have seen before and know how it is suppose to look. I ended up passing on a deal for Stargate on Blu ray since the TV I saw it demoed on made it looked awful.

yeah the soap opera effect caused by the 120hz refresh rate. I dont know why that even exist. why would anyone watch movies(or anything at all) like that.. :dunno

It's not the 120hz refresh, rather the filling in of that rate with interpolated frames.  They are related, but not the same.  Also keep in mind that it's not always well implemented.

It's like 3D.  Some people like it and others hate it.  If you like feeling like the actors are in the room with you (eg. live performance) then the interpolation is pretty cool.  My projector has an option for it, and it's considered to be well implemented on the model I have.  With this unit, there are several levels of intensity available and I usually set it at the middle.  Just enough to smooth out some of the pans and scrolls, but not so much as to go "full soap" on the movie.  You also need a receiver that has a programmable delay on the output, as the frame interpolation takes time to process.

yeah, unfortunately my reciever doesn't have this ability. I have the option (which i would like to use) is to set my TV as the "center" speaker and the audio output on the TV as The left and rights... the slight delay between the outputs and the TV speakers is killer... i had to shut off the TV speakers. :dunno
