Anyone using Windows2000 for their MAME Cab
« on: August 27, 2003, 10:18:19 am »
I was just wondering if anyone was using Windows2000 as an OS for their MAME cabinet and if so, any complications during setup with an arcade monitor?

Also, is it possible to boot right into a frontend like with 98 and such? Assuming of course your services are tweaked for MAME , and you're using the Auto Logon feature.

My monitor is the K7400, or will be in the final stages of my project.

Thank you,

Michael

Win2000 should work fine.  I use XP, which is similar to 2000.  To start up the frontend w/ windows, you can just place a shortcut to it in the Startup folder found in the start menu.

iam using win2k with no problems at all.. i find it mutch faster and alot more resource freindly than xp as it hasnt got all the crap that comes with xp, i know you can turn the xp stuff off but if your gona do that then why install it :)

dunno about the arcade monitor iam afraid,
I use a geeforce3ti200 with tv/out connected via a scart tv.. all seems to work ok

xp is good.. i use it on my pc but ... for the cab i recommend 2k, but thats just my opinion.. i bet somebody will give a reason not too :)

It'll probably be Howard saying XP has better multimedia handling, and XP is essentially a 'finished' 2k...

And he'd be right about it IMO  :)

But yes, XP certainly has some crap to turn off...

What he said.... :)

Using 2k over xp is almost as bad as using nt 4.1 over windows 98.  They are similar but not the same.  2k = business oriented.  Xp=gaming oriented.

But yes there are services you can do without.  Go to www.blackviper.com for that.

Actually , I've been using 2000 since it's release, and although buggy at first, it has proven over time , to be the most stable OS around IMO. :-)

Before I toyed with ideas of getting a cab, I had played MAME using 98, 2000 and XP. Just to get a feel for the better gameplay. I was hooked on 2000, not just because of better fps , but overall stability. Just as it's business oriented, so shall it be for any home user concerned with maximum performance and excellent dependability. With DX9, along with my gf3ti500, MAME has never given me a problem.

I wasn't really looking for an OS war, and I hope I didn't imply a superior OS when asking. I was only hoping I could find the same comfort with 2000 in a cab, as I do with my Standard PC. I apologize if I may have asked the wrong question. :-/

I just basically wanted to hear from the 2000 users with an arcade monitor and the VGA card from ultimarc, both the good and bad of using 2000, and pretty much make a determination from there. More or less an idea or two on setup and configuration and overall compatiblity.

Thank you,

Michael

It's quite literally impossible for 2k to be more stable than Xp as stability is realted to the core and 2k and xp share the same kernel.

I find it odd that you want advice, but yet you are unwilling to listen to it unless it's the answer you want.  I'm not trying to be a jerk here, but if you only wanted to hear good things about 2k then why did you ask?

Hardware is unaffected regardless of os as long as it's a m$ os and the hardware isn't old.

I'm sorry Howard_Casto,

I think you may have misunderstood what I had originally asked. I was seeking feedback from those who have used 2000 in their cab and could report of their findings, EITHER good or bad.

The fact that I like 2000 or you like XP , or JoeBlow likes 3.1, is irregardless. I didn't want an OS war to start in this thread, I see that all the time @ NeoWin. Nevertheless, I apologize if I raised your ire, Howard_Casto.

Zod, I am using Win2k in my cabinet and I think it's fine.  I have had no problems with it.  I am not using an arcade monitor and the ArcadeVGA card you are looking at though.  Anyways, it's obvious that either XP or 2000 are the best choices for a Mame cab (considering you have a fast enuf computer).  You are going to be satisfied with either one.

Im using Win2K in my cab aswell but only because it doubles as a webserver/ftpserver and its to much hassle updating to XP with all the ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- running allready.
Most things work just fine but getting ADVMame running with my Radeon VE under Wink2 =  :'(

Thank you for the replies on Win2000 as an OS choice. I'm assuming as it's my first cab, any OS, from the beginning will be quite a chore to set up and configure. Since I'll be doing a Win2K, ArcadeMonitor, ArcadeVGA setup, I'll report of my findings to the board for future reference.

Thanks again,

Michael
